Abstract

(Tittle: Adults-Children Power Relations in Judy Blume's "Blubber"). This study aims to uncover the power relations between adults and children in Judy Blume's novel entitled Blubber. This study used a qualitative method by paying attention to the expressions used in the novel related to the topic of power relations of adults-children. Peer debriefing techniques were applied in this study in order to achieve the validity of the research results. The collected data of dialogues and narrations suggest that adults assert dominance toward children especially physically and psychologically as a consequence of the adults' ideologies while trying to retain the image of a mentor. On the other hand, they also give spaces for children to grow and develop themselves. The research also revealed how Blubber paints a more realistic depiction of children and explores more of their human nature beyond images of innocence and naivety.             Keywords: abuse, Blubber, children's literature, egalitarian, power relations

Abstract

ABSTRACT  This paper analyzes the portrayal of Victorian women and men in the poem of Moira O'Neill, entitled “The Grand Match”. The poem gives the description of men and women relationship related to the discussion of love and marriage. As one of Victorian female poets, O'Neill tries to satirize the relationship of women and men by portraying the love story of a stereotypical male fortune seeker, who marries a rich woman and denies his own feeling toward a young-charming woman. This study is an attempt to show that O'Neill's female characters are not typically women commonly found in a literary text during the era in which it was written. In many ways they position themselves as a complete break from the traditional stereotyping of women, and they even can be seen as the representation of “New Woman”. In addition, through this study, the readers would be able to broaden their perspectives that although the Victorian Age was known as the era of prose, there are a lot of poems worth reading.

Abstract

Many students of English Language and Literature study program analyze “The Revolt of ‘Mother’ “, which is a short story written by Mary E. Walkins Freeman, by using a feminist approach. Most of them are trying to focus their attention to its’ female major character, named Sarah Penn. She is seen as a strong woman who has a courage to speak up her mind and break the patriarchal system. However, it is also important to question the point of view of the other female character in Freeman’s short story. A critical reading on this work can give new insights of the women perspectives on patriarchy. Therefore, this paper explores the contrast of women perspectives in relation to the patriarchal system as reflected in one of Freeman’s short stories. Keywords: A critical reading, patriarchal system, women’s contradictory perspectives.

Abstract

Environmental issues are on-going crises that have yet found sufficient solutions. Children, as the next generation, must be given the trust to be able to get in touch with environmental issues as form of children’s empowerment and preservation act. This study aims to describe the views of elementary school students and teachers related to children’s ecology-themed storybooks. This research is qualitative, the data collection uses a list and guided interview questions, observation sheets, questionnaire sheets, and expert validation sheets. The results of the study are as follows. First, there is a lack of ecological books in major bookstore in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The existing children books containing environmental theme only included it as a supporting theme. This may result in most children participant to be not interested in such books.  Second, teachers are mostly in agreement as to how children ecological storybook should appear ideally. This includes realism as the story’s genre, explicit theme, forest settings, picture book form, human characters nature vs human conflict, and happy closed ending for the story. All of these are believed to be able to educate children on the on-going environmental crisis and to encourage the children to face them. Keywords: children’s storybooks, ecology, children’s empowerment, environment, children’s literature
