Abstract

Theological reflection on grace has a long history. Disput between Augustine and Pelagius on grace has been very well known. In modern times, controversy about grace was raised in the dispute between the dominicans (Thomism) and the Jesuits (Molinism). Learning from weaknesses in those debates, a theological reflection with the 'liberty' paradigm affirms that grace must be understood as nothing other than Godself in action and relation to human beings. Gratia increata should not be separated from gratia creata. Grace is given not only because of human sin, but because of an essence that longs for fulfillment. The working power of grace is not an absolute one as not to leave space for human freedom. Accordingly, grace should not be understood as merely an inward thing. The historical aspect of grace should not be ignored.

Abstract

Confronted with the inescapable fact of plurality of religions, Christians are called out as well to reformulate their self understanding contextually. This challenge has been thought up by Edward Schillebeeckx as a task to rediscover Christian self understanding which is more open, undiscriminating to other religions, but in the same breath remains authentic to its colour and identity. On the one hand we might see some similarities of Schillebeeckx’s position with the pluralist theologians, given that revelation is viewed as both highlighting the limitless character of God as its subject and admitting human being’s limited horizon to receive it. On the other hand Schillebeeckx never claimed to have been a follower of pluralistic theory. His criticism of Paul Knitter shows a tendency that the former seems to be closer to those adopting inclusivistic theory. This proclivity is related with his christology that gives a unique place to Jesus Christ as the Son of God and the only saviour. Such position need not be discriminative to other religions in so far as the uniqueness of Jesus Christ is situated concretely in relation to the universal character of his salvation and providing that the grace characteristic of faith is not neglected.

Abstract

The author introduces a way of theologising by way of a particular paradigm, that is, ‘freedom’ paradigm. From the philosophical viewpoint this way of thinking according to the paradigm is chosen with the consideration that it has become one of the central themes in modern thought, is not under the level of reflection reached by the modern thought, and conforms the requirement of reason to borderlessly question the fundamental cause of everything. From the theological viewpoint, the choice for this paradigm has a consequence that ‘freedom’ becomes the reference, towards which theological reflection always directs itself. The author shows that ‘freedom’ paradigm brings the potential to be the reference in understanding and formulating Christian fundamental doctrines on many themes: on God and the reality of creation, humanity (theological anthropology), Jesus Christ (Christology), grace and sacraments, concepts of salvation (soteriology), history and its final meaning (eschatology), actual themes like human rights, freedom to have religion, et cetera.

Abstract

Theology with ‘freedom’ paradigm understands grace not as a third matter between God and humans. The nature of grace is God and God’s actions in relationship with and insofar as humans experience them. With regard to the attempts to understand the relation between grace and the sacraments, an integrated description of the sacrament as a representative and real symbol could be formulated. God is present in the sacraments through the particular symbols and when God is present, God is therefore realising humans’ salvation through the real symbols. In a sacramental celebration, with all the complexities of its forms and activities, the faithful experience how God is exceptionally present (in representative symbols) and when God is present salvation is realised or embodied (in real symbols). This is an explanation of how grace is conveyed through the celebration of the sacraments.
