<![CDATA[The Medan City Public Library is a facility owned by the North Sumatra regional government which is intended to increase people's interest in reading which is still very lagging behind compared to other countries. The image of the library as an information and education facility is represented in the lobby area interior as the first area that the public encounters in this library. As a public facility owned by the local government of North Sumatra, the Medan City Public Library also has added value by applying concepts that depart from the local cultural values of North Sumatra. The design of decorative elements placed in the lobby area takes the basic idea of the geometric motif of ulos cloth. Ulos cloth is one of the traditional cultural heritages that has a very high historical value and is identical as a traditional cloth for the people of North Sumatra. Currently ulos cloth has lost its popularity among the younger generation. Even Dutch anthropologists say that the Ulos cloth culture is almost extinct. This study aims to examine how ulos cloth is creatively processed to be applied as a decorative element in the lobby area of the Medan City Public Library. The research method used in this research is descriptive qualitative method, by conveying an assessment of the physical data of the library lobby area to secondary data about design theory and about ulos cloth. The results of this study indicate that the application of geometric motifs of ulos cloth can strengthen the image of the lobby area of the Medan City Public Library as a facility owned by the North Sumatra government.Perpustakaan Umum Kota Medan merupakan fasilitas milik pemerintah daerah Sumatera Utara yang ditujukan untuk meningkatkan minat baca masyarakat yang masih sangat tertinggal dibandingkan negara lain. Citra Perpustakaan sebagai fasilitas informasi dan edukasi direpresentasikan pada interior area lobby sebagai area pertama yang ditemui masyarakat di perpustakaan ini. Sebagai fasilitas umum milik pemerintah daerah Sumatera Utara, Perpustakaan Umum Kota Medan juga memiliki nilai lebih dengan penerapan konsep yang berangkat dari nilai-nilai budaya lokal Sumatera Utara. Desain elemen dekoratif yang diletakkan di area lobby mengambil ide dasar dari motif geometris kain ulos. Kain Ulos adalah salah satu peninggalan budaya tradisional yang memiliki nilai kesejarahan yang sangat tinggi dan identik sebagai kain adat bagi masyarakat Sumatera Utara. Saat ini kain ulos telah kehilangan popularitasnya di kalangan generasi muda. Bahkan antropolog Belanda mengatakan bahwa budaya kain Ulos sudah hampir punah. Penelitian ini ditujukan untuk mengkaji bagaimana kain ulos diproses secara kreatif untuk diterapkan sebagai elemen dekoratif di area lobby Perpustakaan Umum Kota Medan. Metode penelitian yang digunakan pada penelitian ini adalah metode kualitatif deskriptif, dengan menyampaikan penilaian terhadap data fisik area lobby perpustakaan terhadap data sekunder tentang teori desain dan tentang kain ulos. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa penerapan motif geometris kain ulos dapat memperkuat citra area lobby Perpustakaan Umum Kota Medan sebagai fasilitas milik pemerintah Sumatera Utara. ]]>
