Abstract

The paper discusses the underlying principle of Qur’anic interpretation from rational and socio-historical perspective as brought forth by Muhammad Asad in his magnum opus The Message of the Qur’an. It emphasized on scientific and rational principle that conceptualize its universal and ethical conception as set forth in his erudite commentary and extensive footnotes. The analysis is based on qualitative method using descriptive and analytical approaches. Data provided were analyzed by way of deductive and inference. The finding shows that his interpretation was influenced from the progressive and scientific outlook of Tafsir al-Manar which espoused ethico-socio approaches (social-artistic form of exegesis) that constitute Asad’s principal ideas and methodology. It brought forth dynamic socio-historical and ethico-legal interpretation that contextualize its moral-ethical spirit and connotation and provide the foundation for social exegesis in contemporary ages.

Abstract

This study highlights the early history of the development of Islamic movements in Malaysia since colonial times. It looks at this from two important and overlapping angles: the islah movement that brought about national consciousness and aspirations for renewal and tajdid, and the influence of the anti-colonial movement and pioneering Islamic politics in the overseas archipelago. This study was qualitative in nature in terms of literature review and content analysis. The data was collected based on the documentation method by applying interpretive, analytical, descriptive, historical and comparative methods of analysis. The study formulates that the preached struggle has brought about significant changes in strengthening the movement and foundation (khittah), illuminating the spirit and soul of freedom, promoting the discourse of Islah and Islamising science. It has revealed the contribution and understanding of Islam that is complete and convincing in working on explicit political and socio-cultural bases and directions, and revealed the height of influence and idealism that extends in the tradition of intellect and civilisation, as well as efforts to build cadres at all levels.

Abstract

This study analyzed Ismail Raji al-Faruqi’s (1921-1986) fundamental ideas of education from the perspective of IOK and tawhidic framework and his critical contribution in articulating modern Islamic worldview and expounding its progressive and inclusive outlook. It set forth to discusses the ideas of Islamization of knowledge as envisaged and propounded in his major works that highlight the doctrine of tawhid and its overarching principle such as Islamization of Knowledge: General Principles and Work Plan, Al-Tawhid: Its Implications for Thought and Life dan etc. The study is based on library research using qualitative approaches by documenting sources derived from some major works of al-Faruqi and other relevant materials. The data was analyzed using descriptive, analytical, and comparative method. The study found that al-Faruqi has bring forth universal Islamic worldview that propounded transcendental religious and philosophical outlook based on his rational and universal premises. His philosophical ideal was founded on critical methodology of tawhid that was instrumental in projecting his Islamization of knowledge movement and in propounding its scientific and rational outlook in order to revived the spirit of reform and reconstructing ijtihad and reclaiming the universal and creative ummatic world order.

Abstract

The paper attempts to survey the emergence of halal-concept hotel chain in Malaysia by reviewing current project and initiative to set up the blueprint and framework of halal-concept hotel based on the principle of halalan toyyiban (allowed and permissible for consumption). Against this backdrop, it looks into current perception and effort to develop shariah-based hotel network and to conceptualize the idea into dynamic embodiment of contemporary Islamic market that reflect a major breakthrough in the industry and marked an important achievement in the halal-business enterprise and current direction of Islamic tourism in Malaysia. The aim of this research is to highlight the significant growth of halal-concept hotel in Malaysia by outlining its origin, conceptual framework and practical orientation, standard practice and basic operation, principal guideline and ethical vision in managing the business, and significant achievement and future challenge and prospect. The study is based on qualitative (narrative) and quantitative (inventories) methods where data is collected from intensive library research and fieldwork. From the discussion, the finding shows that the industry has been targeting to become an alternative to conventional hotel and improving the conventional order and practice of hospitality in line with shariah-based principle, by invoking a Muslim-friendly environment and embark on projecting new innovation to advance Islamic alternative as Malaysia continue to lead this highly competitive market of global halal industry.

Abstract

The paper aims to study the ideas and influence of Abu’l-Walid Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Rushd (1126-1198) in inspiring the Age of Enlightenment in Europe. His philosophical works and doctrine written in early 6-12th centuries has manifested dramatic influence in the making of Western civilization as recognized in the late 18th century renaissance. The phenomenal impact of this highly Muslim contribution was seen in the cultural worldview that constitute the cornerstone of Western Europe. The study is based on qualitative approaches in the form of literature review and content analysis. The data were obtained from primary and secondary sources and analyzed by way of descriptive, analytical, thematic, hermeneutic, synthetic and historical technique. The finding shows that the works and thought of Ibn Rushd as presented in Fasl al-Maqal (The Decisive Treatise) has inspired radical intellectual transformation in European society. This paper contributes to highlight historical influence of his scientific works that constitute the cornerstone of his worldview and discuss the monumental socio-religious reform initiated by this great giant, Ibn Rushd in the political landscape of al-Andalus and the history of Western Europe.

Abstract

This article examines the scientific thought of Shaykh Muhammad Abduh (1849-1905) ideas on science by systematically analyzing his extensive works on science, such as Al-Islam wa al-Nasraniyyah Ma‘a al-‘Ilm wa’l-Madaniyyah (Islam and Christianity in Relation to Science and Civilization), Tafsir al-Manar (The Manar Commentary), Tafsir Juz ‘Amma (the Commentary of Juz ‘Amma), Risalat al-Tawhid (Treatise on the Unity of God), Journal al-Manar (the Lighthouse) and other important literary works and prolific writings of Muhammad ‘Abduh. The principal themes discussed in this work concentrated on Muhammad Abduh’s philosophy of science, ‘Abduh’s contributions to modernity, and his scientific views in the Qur’an. It also discussed his influence on the modern Egypt and its important impact in the enlightening and reforming of modern Islam. The method of study is qualitative (narrative) in nature based on literature survey. The study significantly arrived at considerable result which demonstrates that Abduh’s primary contribution to science and technology is to Islamize its dynamic character and foundation based on modern Islamic worldview. This was significantly illustrated in his endeavor to present scientific commentary of the Qur’an which focused on the primacy of ‘aql (intellect) and reason, unleashing his rational understanding of the text, and contributing to the revival of scientific thought, the freedom of ideas (taharrur) and dynamic religious worldview.
