Abstract

This article concerns with the use of metaphors for constructing animal names in Indonesian. By using data collected from Indonesian Standard Dictionary and cognitive metaphorical theory, it is found that the animals names can be expressed in various forms and the metaphors are possibly placed on the head, attribute, or the whole of construction. The source domains of the metaphors are taken from entities that exist in the speakers’ environment and they are projected to the target domains through similarities and associations. As result of, Indonesian relation to other languages, the influence of foreign languages and local languages in the formation of metaphors cannot be avoided.

Abstract

This article intends to reveal various language functions consisted in Ismail Marzuki’s song lyrics in the frame of the widely known Jakobson’s language function theory. By using data gathered from various sources, the research findings shows that Ismail Marzuki’s song lyrics are dominated by the use of language which is exploited to bear poetic function in order to enable the audiences experiencing the song’s messages and other language functions aesthetically. All Marzuki’s song lyrics concern with extralinguistic world. Accordingly, it is not surprising that none of the song lyric is used to convey metalinguistic function for explaining the internal structure of a language.

Abstract

This paper is intended to describe the Northern Balinese nickname system with focus of attention on the forms and their relation with the owner’s real names, and various references and their connection with the extralinguistic facts of the person they refer to. By using correlational method between the nicknames and the owner’s real names, and between the references and physical, behavioral, and historical realities of the personthey denote to, It is found that there are at least three relation types that hold between the nicknames and the real names, namely arbitrary, formal, and extralinguistic relation type; The nicknames semantically refer to various entities, such as animal and its excrement, physical and mental characteristics, illness, fruit and food, childhood expressions, personal figures, and important events. All of these referents are essentially reflections of cultural realities of the Nothern Balinese community members’ interaction in their new places.
