Abstract

Background: Water fluoridation (WF) has been a national caries prevention program in Malaysia since 1972. However, between July 2012 and December 2013, WF was discontinued in Pahang. This study aimed to compare caries prevalence and mean caries experience among Malaysian children in WF and WF-ceased areas and determine its associated risk factors. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted among 12-year-old schoolchildren in two Malaysian states: Pahang (WF-ceased) and Perak (WF-continued). Dental caries was examined using ICDAS criteria, and a questionnaire was used to collect relevant data. Associations between independent variables and dental caries were analyzed by simple logistic regression and general linear model analyses. Results: Dental caries (D4-6MFT) was significantly higher among children in WF-ceased areas than in communities where WF continued. Multivariate analysis demonstrated that exposure to WF remains a strong predictor of low caries experience among the study population. Moreover, children with irregular toothbrushing frequency before sleep and whose parents have lower educational attainment are associated with higher caries experience. Conclusion: Caries prevalence and mean caries experience were significantly higher among children in WF-ceased areas than in communities where WF continued. Multivariate analysis revealed that several factors were associated with caries experience.

Abstract

Objectives: This study evaluates the scientific outcomes of endocrown research in terms of publication patterns, prominent publishing authors and countries, highly cited articles, and high-impact keywords using bibliometric analysis. Methods: A search was conducted in the Elsevier Scopus database for articles related to endocrowns using the query TS = “endocrown” OR “endo-crown” OR “endo crown*”. Analysis and visualization of the relevant literature and their publication data were performed using MS Excel, VOSviewer, and Biblioshiny. Results: Endocrown research has shown a steady annual growth of 15.23% since 1999, indicating a growing interest and focus in this area. Brazil was ranked among the top contributors, followed by Switzerland. The Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry and Operative Dentistry was found to be the leading publisher of endocrown-related articles, while the Journal Dental Materials accumulated a significant number of citations despite a smaller number of published articles, indicating a high impact per publication. Major core research areas identified in endocrown research include the development of new materials with the incorporation of finite element analysis (FEA) and computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technology. Finally, endocrown-related emerging keywords include “ceramic” with the highest annual normalized citation (ANC = 1.84), followed by “crown” (ANC = 1.40) and “lithium disilicate” (ANC = 131). Conclusions: The consistent annual growth of endocrown-related publications reflects rising interest in endocrown as a viable treatment option for endodontically treated teeth. It is expected that future research will prioritise exploring new materials and advancements in technology like CAD/CAM, along with incorporating FEA studies.

Abstract

Background: Over the years, social media (SM) has become a powerful tool for communication and health promotion, enabling health professionals to connect with wider audiences in real time. However, there is a lack of qualitative data to understand end users’ perspectives on what is effective and what may require improvement. Purpose: This study aimed to explore preferences, reactions, and perceived impacts of oral health (OH) promotion on SM among Malaysian young adults. Methods: This qualitative study involved in-depth interviews with young adults aged 20–35 years. Purposive sampling was used to ensure diverse representation across several states in Malaysia. Twenty interviews were recorded and transcribed verbatim. Data were coded and analyzed thematically using Atlas.ti software. Three main themes—preferences, reactions, and perceived impacts—and seven sub-themes emerged from the analysis. Results: The young adults expressed positive views regarding OH promotion activities on SM. Most participants preferred visually appealing OH content, such as short videos and infographics, delivered in simple terms in the national language, and presented by health professionals. Although some participants identified as silent readers who did not actively engage with OH-related content, most believed that SM interventions had positively influenced their OH knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors. Conclusion: Most participants had positive perceptions of OH promotion through SM interventions, with some expressing clear content preferences. These findings may support the development of more effective OH promotion strategies in Malaysia that better align with user expectations.
