Abstract

This thesis aimed to find communication strategies used by teachers during classroom interaction. This research was conducted in SMP Swasta Katolik Assisi Medan. The subject of this research was the English Teacher. The researcher used a qualitative approach, more specifically classroom discourse analysis, in analyzing this study since the source of the data was communication strategies that are used by an English teacher in communicating with her students during an English teaching-learning activity. The data was taken by recording 90 minutes of English Lessons. The researcher used Celce-Murcia as a framework for this data analysis because of its specification and newness. The result showed that the five strategies used were repetition. From those strategies, code-switching was the strategy that was most frequently used by the teacher during the process of teaching and learning. The teacher`s reasons for applying those communication strategies were to overcome the communication barriers that occur between the teacher and the students and to help the students understand and memorize the material more accessible. The result of the interview also showed that the students had a good perception of the implementation of communication strategies used by the teacher in the classroom.

Abstract

Brunei Malay is a unique Malay dialect spoken not only in Brunei Darussalam, but also in neighboring parts of Borneo. Although extensive data are available on lexical borrowings in Standard Malay and Indonesian, surprisingly, Brunei Malay has not been studied in this regard. Our paper aims to fill this gap by identifying English, Arabic and Chinese loanwords in the only available dictionary (Kamus Bahasa Melayu Brunei). We had looked into the linguistic distribution and word classes of the borrowed lexis, and understood that the main borrower was Arabic, followed by English; however, only a few words of Chinese origin could be found in the corpus. The most prominent word class was nouns, with a significantly lower number of verbs and adjectives. In the last part of our paper we are going to give some examples for usage of these loanwords in context.

Abstract

This study is aimed at describing the speech acts of the request of fish traders as buyers to fishermen as sellers at  fish auctions (Tempat Pelelangan Ikan/TPI) at Carocok Port, Koto XI Tarusan District, Pesisir Selatan Regency. The objectives of the study are to identify the modes and the types of requests used by fish traders in the fish auction of Carocok  Port. The research is qualitatively conducted.  The data were collected by using the observational  method with note-taking, recording, and interviewing. 21 informants, 8 fishermen, 10 retailers,  and  3 housewives were interviewed to dig information about the reasons for using a certain way of making the request. The analysis was done by determining the criteria of speech acts of the request (Kissine, 2013) (Ike Revita, 2008). The result of the analysis is descriptively done. The percentage was used to identify the number of occurrences of a certain type. After analyzing the data, it is found that the declarative and imperative mode is used more than interrogative and exclamative.  Speech acts of a direct request appear more dominant than indirect ones. This implies that the speech acts of the request of fish traders tend to be straightforward, in line with the firmness of bidding the price.

Abstract

This study aimed to identify the knowledge of Brunei Malay dialect vocabulary among youths and to discuss the challenges as well as steps in enhancing the knowledge of this dialect. Brunei Malay dialect or known as ‘Cakap Barunai’ is a dialect widely used among Bruneians, and considered as the mother tongue and the daily communication language among the locals. According to studies, the Ethno Vitality Rate of Brunei Malay dialect was high and considered safe; however, recent trends have shown decreasing usage of Brunei Malay especially among the Bruneian youths (15-40 years old). There are insufficient studies to ascertain whether this trend affects the youths’ Brunei Malay vocabulary knowledge. This study adapted the Vocabulary Knowledge Scale (VKS) test on the Brunei Malay vocabulary and a set of survey containing Likert scale and open-ended questions to collect the research data distributed among 102 respondents. Based on the data, the knowledge of Brunei Malay dialect was considered low as only 20.9% received responses that indicated the correct vocabulary’s meaning. The survey showed that influences from different languages and social media, and lack of exposure and intergenerational transfer were the main causes of this issue. Suggestions to preserve this dialect included education, campaigns, social media and family involvement.

Abstract

This study aims to thoroughly investigate the linguistic impact of emojis and emoticons in modern written communication. This work attempts to shed light on these digital symbols’ linguistic structure, social implications, and evolution through a multidisciplinary research method. A mixed-methods approach was used in the research, integrating interdisciplinary viewpoints with quantitative and qualitative analyses. A vast amount of data was gathered from various digital communication channels, such as email exchanges, messaging apps, and social media. A sizable collection of text messages with emojis and emoticons was assembled. Emotional cons and emojis were categorized using linguistic analysis, breaking down their structure into visual components and repeating patterns. Their grammatical and syntactic effects on written language were also evaluated in this investigation. The findings indicate that using emojis in writing positively correlates with emotional expressiveness. This implies that when people wish to express emotions and subtlety in their messages, they typically utilize more emoticons. They enhance digital etiquette, reduce misunderstandings, improve emotional connection, and foster cross-cultural understanding. Emoticons are a global visual language that helps people communicate, create empathy, and navigate digital communication.
