Abstract

Cities that grow on an island have limitations in utilizing space for various activities. The limited space of island activity, population growth, and high urban activity have signaled the need to analyze the optimal capacity of island cities. With the Ternate City case study, this study aims to determine the capacity of island cities economically by analyzing the optimal size of island city residents. The optimal measurement of island cities uses the Alonso-Richardson approach, minimum management cost, net benefit, and long-term profit. The results of the analysis showed that the city of Ternate, with a population density of 1,264 people / km2 per the year 2020, has exceeded the optimum capacity of the size of the city both from the minimum per capita city management fee (658 people/km2) and from the maximum approach of per capita benefits (877 people/km2). While from the long-term maximum per capita profit approach, the city's population is still below the optimum limit (2,054 inhabitants/km2). Thus, strict population control is essential, especially on Ternate island, through the spread of residents and activities directed to islands or sub-districts whose urbanization is still below the optimum point of the city population.

Abstract

This study aims to: (1), Knowing the share of expenditure, the progress of prices of staple food and people's income in Central Halmahera Regency, (2), Analyzing the level of people's purchasing power with an indicator of the ratio of income to prices of staple foods in Central Halmahera Regency, and (3), Analyze the level of people's purchasing power with an indicator of the ratio of income to the index of staple food prices in Central Halmahera Regency. The results of the analysis show that the expenditure of community households in Central Halmahera Regency is specifically allocated to fulfill the consumption of fresh rice and fish, followed by consumption of flour, sugar and cooking oil. While the allocation of expenditures for consumption of staple-sourced staple foods includes chicken, milk, eggs and beef is still very low. The price of staple food in Central Halmahera Regency during the observation period of 2009 until 2018 in January - March, tends to increase in the range of 2% - 12%. Whereas on the other hand, the level of income of the community only changes in the range of 5% - 7%, with the highest income enjoyed by employees and entrepreneurs and conversely the lowest income is felt by farmers. The purchasing power of people in Central Halmahera Regency with an indicator of the ratio of income to each of the staple food prices tends to fluctuate but has experienced significant improvements in 2018 compared to 2009, except for the purchasing power measured as equal to beef consumption. The purchasing power equivalent to beef consumption has decreased to 22.32% because the percentage increase in income is less able to compensate for the increase in beef prices. Measured by the income ratio indicator on the basic food price index, people's purchasing power also showed an improvement in 2018 compared to 2009, but that only happened to farmers, construction workers, and civil servants groups I / II. When compared to 2017, public purchasing power in 2018 as a whole decreased by 12.38%. The purchasing power level of people in Central Halmahera Regency from the lowest ranking in sequence is felt by groups of farmers, followed by construction workers, civil servants groups I / II, entrepreneurs and employees.

Abstract

Horticultural farming plays a vital role in rural livelihoods and agricultural diversification, yet many smallholders struggle with low financial literacy and limited access to affordable credit, which constrains profitability. This study investigates the correlation between financial literacy and microcredit access on the profitability of horticultural farming enterprises. Using a quantitative correlational design, primary data were collected from 200 horticultural farmers through structured questionnaires covering financial literacy indicators, microcredit access, and profitability measures such as net profit margin, return on investment, and gross margin. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, and multiple linear regression. The results show that financial literacy is strongly correlated with profitability (r = 0.63, p < 0.01), while microcredit access also exhibits a positive but weaker correlation (r = 0.42, p < 0.05). Regression analysis confirms both variables as significant predictors of profitability, with financial literacy (β = 0.46, p < 0.01) exerting greater influence compared to microcredit access (β = 0.28, p < 0.05). The model explains 51% of the variation in profitability, highlighting that credit provision alone is insufficient without adequate financial capability. This study concludes that financial literacy and microcredit access act as complementary enablers of farm profitability. Strengthening financial education alongside inclusive microcredit programs is therefore essential to enhance the sustainability and competitiveness of horticultural enterprises.

Abstract

North Maluku's economy continues to advance with the agricultural sector, particularly plantations, as the main contributor. Plantations have a positive impact on the economy with various value-added commodities. This study aims to analyse the economic base commodities and the level of specialisation of plantation subsector commodity development in North Maluku Province. The data used is secondary data with the main data of production volume of plantation subsector commodities at the national level, North Maluku Province, and district/city areas. The analysis method used was Location Quotient and Specialisation Index analysis method. The analysis results show that there are five commodities identified as economic base commodities in the plantation subsector, namely Nutmeg, Coconut, Clove, Cashew, and Cocoa. The five base commodities are evenly distributed in each district/city in North Maluku. The analysis shows that efforts to specialise commodity development have not been optimal in this province, including at the district/city level.
