Abstract

The aims of this study were to find out theprogress in students’ writing achievement after they were taught by using blogs, and to find out the significant difference in students’ writing achievement between the students who were taught by using blogs and those who were not. A quasi-experimental method was used in this study. The population of the study was all the students in Faculty of Economic at Indo Global Mandiri University in the academic year 2014/2015. The sample consisted of 40 students where 20 students for experimental group and 20 students for control group, and was selected by using purposive sampling. In order to get the data, a test was used. The data was obtained in the form of writing test. The test was given twice, to the experimental and control groups, as pre-test and post-test. The result of the test was analyzed by using t-test through SPSS program. The finding showed that (1) There were some progresses in students’ writing due to the use of blog during the teaching and learning activities, and (2) There was a significant difference between the students who were taught by using blogs and those who were not. Key Words: Improving, Writing Ability, Blogs

Abstract

Listening is a process included activity of listening sound of language and visual aspect, identify, interprete, value, and do reaction for the content of meaning. Technology is useful to teach listening because each type of technology provides opportunities for students to explore their ranges of listening strategies.Multimedia technology becomes more accessible to teachers and learners of other languages, its potential as a tool to enhance listening skills becomes a practical option.  The technology mediates the process, getting language out there and giving feedback that shows whether someone has or hasn’t understood what people have said.It makes that possible wherever people are in the world. Teachers and learners can go online to listen to material about different areas of interest, and can then speak about what they have discovered, telling others in the class or other classes elsewhere in the world. The Internet is suitable place to practice languages as it offers the possibility, with the right software, of using images and audio resources at the same time, combining sounds and images as in communicative situations in the real world. It also provides users with a highly appealing and innovative format. But only when the sources are properly selected can the internet be useful in learning environment. There is a plethora of educational material available online and accessible via Web search engines. In short, using websites for practicing listening can be a good assistance for students to practice their language learning ability.Key words: Listening, English, Website

Abstract

AbstractThe aim of the study was to find out whether there was a significant improvement of students’ reading comprehension achievement after being taught by using RAP strategy or not. The population was all the students of Information System at Indo Global Mandiri University. The sample consisted forty students which was selected by using Purpossive sampling. In collecting the data, a test was used and there was fifty items of multiple choice questions. The data was analyzed by using t-test (Paired Samples t-test). The findings showed that RAP strategy was significant in improving the EFL students’ reading comprehension achievement. It can be seen from the mean of the pre-test and post-test which shows that there was significant difference in students’ reading comprehension after being taught reading by using RAP Strategy. The students who were taught reading by using RAP Strategy had better higher achievement in comprehension after having the treatment. In conclusion, the use of reciprocal teaching strategy could improve the students’ reading comprehension.Keywords : reading comprehension, RAP strategy AbstrakTujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui apakah ada peningkatan yang signifikan dari pencapaian pemahaman membaca siswa setelah diajarkan dengan menggunakan strategi RAP atau tidak. Populasinya adalah seluruh mahasiswa Sistem Informasi diUniversitas Indo Global Mandiri. Sampel dalam penelitian ini terdiri dari empat puluh siswa yang dipilih dengan menggunakan Purpossive sampling. Tes terdiri dari lima puluh pertanyaan pilihan ganda yang digunakan sebagai teknik untuk mengumpulkan data. Dalam penelitian ini, t-test digunakan sebagai teknik untuk menganalisa data (Paired Samples t-test). Temuan menunjukkan bahwa strategi RAP signifikan dalam meningkatkan pencapaian pemahaman membaca siswa EFL. Hal ini dapat dilihat dari hasil rata-rata pre-test dan post-test yang menunjukkan bahwa ada perbedaan yang signifikan dalam pemahaman membaca siswa setelah diajarkan membaca dengan menggunakan Strategi RAP. Siswa yang diajar membaca dengan menggunakan Strategi RAP memiliki pencapaian pemahaman yang lebih baik. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa penggunaan strategi pengajaran RAP dapat meningkatkan pemahaman membaca siswa.Kata kunci: pemahaman bacaan, strategi RAP

Abstract

This study describes the use of High 5 Strategies in English Foreign Language classroom. As one of teaching strategies, High 5 strategies can help the students to tackle their reading. High 5 strategies consists of activating background knowledge, questioning, analyzing text structure, creating mental images, and summarizing. First, activating background knowledge is the important concept of reading that can help the students to connect what they already learned or knew before so that it allows the students to get a better understanding of what it is about. Second, question is also the important way for students to form questions that help them understand what to look for as they read. Then, the students need to understand the structure of the text that help them easier comprehend each part of paragraph in the text by analyzing the text structure. Next, creating mental image or visualizing is used to imagine the structure of the text that the students have known before, so as they read, they should also imagine how the structure is. Finally, the students summarize all important information that they already got using the previous strategies. High 5 strategies provide an opportunity for all the EFL students to activate their background knowledge and form question in their mind, analyze, visualize and summarize the reading. In short, High 5 strategies can be used to help the students to learn better especially in improving their reading skill.

Abstract

This study aimed at seeing whether the use of tourism brochures was effective to improve students’ achievement in writing descriptive text. In particular, it sought to find out whether tourism brochures was an effective means for generating ideas in writing descriptive text. The design selected for this study was a quasi-experimental study using nonequivalent pretest posttest design. The population of the study was all eighth grade students at SMP Karya Ibu Palembang. This study involved 262 students of the eighth graders. The sample was purposively chosen as the sample of the study in which 20 students belonged to the experimental group and 20 students belonged to the control group. The data were obtained by means of writing test as the instruments. The study lasted one and half months in that during the treatment, the student were exposed to a wide range of writing activities including process writing particularly a prewriting activity by using tourism brochures. The result shows that there was a significant difference among the writing test mean scores before and after they were exposed to tourism brochures and there was a significant difference in students’ test scores between the students who were taught by tourism brochures and those who were not. The research findings revealed that the use of tourism brochures was effective to improve students’ writing achievement. These findings were also supported by the significant improvement in writing achievement between the two groups in terms of the six aspects of writing (topic sentence, supporting detail sentence, concluding sentence, word choice, mechanics and grammar, sensory details). The results of the pre-test and post-test showed a positive response that tourism brochures was very helpful for the students in improving their descriptive writing achievement especially in generating, gathering, exploring and organizing their ideas prior to writing a descriptive text. The study was expected to yield a better quality of writing and build writing habit among students in a greater scale.Key Word: Writing achievement, Tourism brochures, Descriptive text

Abstract

Pronunciation is one of the most prominent aspects in speaking. People must be able to pronounce words correctly in order to avoid misunderstandings while communicating what they wish to discuss. However, many students found pronunciation as one of the most difficult aspects in speaking. In this instance, the drilling technique was chosen to address the issue. Therefore, this study investigated the use of drilling technique to improve the students’ pronunciation. In this research the writer used quantitative method which focused on pre-experimental design. Convenience sampling was used in this research and paired sample t-test was used for the data analysis by using SPSS 25.0 program. The result of the test of pre-test showed that the mean of students’ score was 27.73 which 100% or 32 out of 32 students who got poor level. Meanwhile, in the post-test the students’ mean score was 75.95 which indicates that the students pronunciation improved, 5 students got very good category, 16 students got good category, 9 students got fair category and only 2 students remained in the poor category. It means that after being taught with the drilling technique, it is possible to state that there was a significant improvement toward the pronunciation of the students. Therefore, based on the results of the questionnaire, it can be concluded that the consonants segment was a difficult aspect of pronunciation for students, with 4 symbols that were the most difficult for them to pronounce coming from consonants, whereas vowels and diphthongs has 1 symbol that was the most difficult for them to pronounce. The findings revealed that teaching pronunciation by using drilling technique was effective toward students' pronunciation achievement at the seventh-grade students of SMP Tri Dharma Palembang in the academic year of 2021/2022.
