Abstract

Background: Dental caries is a major health problem affecting most of the world's population and is a multifactorial disease caused by the host, microorganisms, substrate and time. Nutrition is very important in maintaining health, growth, and has a relationship with nutritional status and dental caries. Obesity that occurs in children is a serious and emergency problem because it can last into adulthood. Objective: the aim of this study is to determine the relationship of Body Mass Index with caries incidence rates in children aged 5-12 years. Methods: This study is an observational analytic study with cross-sectional design in children aged 5-12 years at Dental Hospital in Faculty of Dentistry Trisakti University in 2019 with a total sample of 85 children. BMI is measured by weight squared divided by height squared to assess the nutritional status of children, while the def-t index and DMF-T index are used to assess the severity of caries. Results: The incidence rate of deciduous dental caries is very high (def-t index 9.75) and the incidence rate of permanent dental caries is low (DMF-T index 1.27). Data analysis using the Pearson correlation test showed there was no relationship between BMI and the incidence rate of dental caries because the p value was > 0.05. Conclusion: There was no relationship between BMI with caries incidence rates in children aged 5-12 years at Dental Hospital in Faculty of Dentistry Trisakti University.

Abstract

Background: First permanent molars play very important roles in the oral cavity. Therefore, tooth loss of these teeth due to caries has major impacts on oral health in the future. Panoramic radiographs have been used routinely in the oral health examinations and have accuracy comparable to intraoral radiographs in detecting carious lesions of posterior teeth. There have been no studies regarding the difference in the severity of caries in first permanent molars using panoramic radiographs before in Indonesia. Objective:  The objective of this study was to determine the difference in the severity of first permanent molars caries in children aged 6-9 years and 10-12 years based on panoramic radiographs at the RSGM-P FKG Trisakti University for the period 2017-2019. Methods: The sample of this study were 680 panoramic radiographs of children aged 6-9 years and 10-12 RSGM-P FKG Trisakti University for the period 2017-2019. In this study, an ICCMS index was used to determine the severity of caries in first permanent molars. Result: The Mann Whitney U test used to determine the difference in the severity of caries showed that there was a difference in the caries severity of first permanent molars in children aged 6-9 years and 10-12 years (p <0.05). Conclusion: There was a difference in the caries severity of first permanent molars in children aged 6-9 years and 10-12 years based on panoramic radiographs at RSGM-P FKG Trisakti University for the period 2017-2019.

Abstract

Background: Children's dental trauma mostly occurs in the maxillary anterior teeth, and falls, sports, traffic accidents, etc. can cause dental trauma. Generally speaking, children experience dental trauma when they are 8-12 years old. Therefore, dental trauma is a serious problem that often occurs in children and requires special attention from parents, especially mothers. Objective: To understand mother’s knowledge and attitudes towards children’s permanent tooth trauma Method: A descriptive observational cross-sectional design was adopted to conduct a survey of 70 respondents. The data was collected using a questionnaire, including 21 questions, tested validity and reliability. The research data is presented in the form of a frequency distribution table. Results: The adequate degree of mother's description of children's dental trauma knowledge was 75.7%, less than 15.7%, and less than 8,6%. In terms of attitude, 44.3% of the respondents hold a high attitude, and 55.7% of the respondents hold a low attitude. Conclusion: Most mothers have a high understanding of dental trauma, but there are still many mothers who have a low attitude towards dental trauma.

Abstract

Background: Oral health problems can affect children's general development, general body health and also have a negative impact on children's quality of life. The high rate of early caries in children with the insidence of active dental caries in Indonesia from 53.2% in 2013 increased to 57.6% in 2018 according to the 2018 Basic Health Research data. The high rate of early caries in children begins with breast milk consumption (0 – 6 months) and increases use of bottled milk during the first 6 months after birth. The habit of drinking milk before bed by using a bottle that is too long, also the habit of sucking candy and sweet foods can cause children to get caries. Objective: To describe the early caries prevalence in children aged 3-5 years who consume breast milk and bottled milk in Early Childhood Education Sapta Kemuning, Depok, West Java.  Methods: This study was a descriptive observational study with a cross sectional approach to describe the prevalence of caries in 56 children aged 3-5 years who consumed breast milk and bottled milk according to the inclusion criteria. The child is examined def-t by the lecture, the parents are given a questionnaire containing 3 questions which include the type of intake given to the child, the frequency of administration, and the position of the child when given the intake that has been tested for validity and reliability. Results: Obtained a mean of def-t 6.4 (high). The results showed that 40 children consumed breast milk and 10 children who consumed bottled milk were exposed to caries with an average def-t value of 6.2 (high) and 7.0 (very high). Conclusion: The results showed that the largest caries prevalence in PAUD Sapta Kemuning students was caused by breast milk consumption which was 95% followed by bottle milk consumption of 83%.

Abstract

Background: Dental caries is one of the problems that are often complained of by the people of Indonesia both in children and adults. The percentage of residents who have dental and mouth problems according to Riskesdas in 2007 and 2013 increased from 23.2% to 25.9%. In 2018 the Indonesian population who had dental and oral problems increased to 57.6%. The risk of caries is quite high in children aged 3 - 5 years, because at this age children usually like to eat food and drinks according to their wishes. Therefore, parents, especially mothers, have an important role in guiding their children so that they can maintain their teeth and mouth well and correctly. Objective: To find out whether there are differences in the prevalence of dental caries and the severity of dental caries in children whose mothers work and do not work Methods: This study was an observational analytic study with a cross sectional approach to know differences in caries prevalence and caries severity in 69 children aged 3-5 years whose mothers worked and did not work. The child is examined def-t by the supervisor, the parents are given a questionnaire containing 8 questions that has been tested for validity and reliability. Results : Caries severity was found in children whose mothers worked 4.9 (high) and in children whose mothers did not work 7.1 (very high). Caries prevalence in children whose mothers work is 78% and in children whose mothers do not work 95%. Conclusion: The results of data analysis showed that p > 0.05 (p = 0.23 and p = 0.08) which means that there was no difference in the prevalence of dental caries and the severity of dental caries in children whose mothers worked and did not work.
