Abstract

The main objective of the study was to determine whether playing Taboo games could affect students' language retention or not. This study focused on 40 students in grade VII at SMP Islam Al-Ikhlas Bekasi during the academic year 2021–2022. In this study, every student was chosen as a sample (class VII-3 and VII-4). With the design of the class control and class experimental, the methodology utilized in this work is quantitative. Using SPSS statistic 26, a statistical analysis of the pre-test and post-test data was conducted. According to the study's findings, the pre-test mean score for the students was 65.40, while the post-test mean score was 86.55. The t-test of students’ achievement in experimental and control group in posttest was smaller than sig. (2-tailed) is 0,000 < 0,05. It means that Taboo games has significant effect on student’s vocabulary students at SMP Islam A-Ikhlas Bekasi.

Abstract

This research was aimed at improving the writing ability of students of VIII C of SMP PGRI 30 Jakarta Timur. The problem was that they had low writing ability. This particular research was categorized as action research. The actions were implemented in two cycles based on the class schedule. This research involved the 28 students of class VIII C of SMP PGRI 30 Jakarta Timur and the English teacher as the research collaborator. The data of the study were in the forms of qualitative and quantitative data. The qualitative data were obtained by observing the teaching and learning process of writing, interviewing the students of class VIII C and the English teacher, holding a discussion with the collaborator and taking figures and recording videos. Meanwhile, the quantitative data were acquired through the pre-test, the progress test, and the post test. The validity of the data was obtained by applying democratic validity, dialogic validity, catalytic validity and outcome validity. The research findings showed that the use of short animated stories combined with the use of some supporting activities and classroom was proven to be effective to improve the students’ writing ability. It could get students’ attention and increased their learning motivation. It can help the students understand the story better as the video content visual or moving images that can help imagining the real situation in the story. The students who just gained 58.8 in the pre-test, were able to increase their score up to 76.1 in the post test. It indicated that they made a considerable improvement in some aspect of writing skills such as content, organization, vocabulary and grammar and mechanics.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to improve English descriptive writing skill through participatory strategy. This research is an action research in SMP Negeri 1 Gempol for students in the first grade.The data of this research was found from students in that class amounted to 38 students.The obtained data is qualitative and quantitative data. The qualitative data of this research is the student learning process of descriptive writing through participatory strategy in SMP Negeri 1 Gempol for students in first grade.The quantitative data is scores or results of students’ English writing test, both before or after learning process through participatory strategy.The obtained data indicates students’ improving English descriptive writing skill through participatory strategy. The result indicates that the use of participatory strategy is applied well.This research can be used by teachers in the school who want to improve their students’ English writing skill. This research can also give some benefits for the other students who want to make an action research
