Abstract

Living without faith commitment is an existential struggle in Indonesia, where religion is essential for communal life. Despite the civic requirement to register one’s religious belief, some students, in reality, live without faith commitment. Their formal religious status is not a reflection of their convictions. They never attend religious worship, and they also have no idea about the core beliefs. Using qualitative phenomenological research, this article reports students’ existential struggle in a religiously-shaped society as an intense experience and struggle to find a place in the community. In the final part of the research, the paper also reflects the biblical perspective and provides recommendations for the church in the contemporary context.

Abstract

BlessU-2 is a robot and a specifically designed anthropomorphic machine that performed a blessing service during 2017’s exhibition in Wittenberg, Germany, commemorating 500 years of the reformation. The exhibition was intended to open a conversation about the future of the church’s service and AI’s role in it. This research explores and introduces today’s AI research development and theological challenges for ecclesiology and Christian worship. The research explores the theological themes that can be employed by Christian theology in general and ecclesiology in particular. It proposes that the main challenge of AI developments is the reinterpretation of the transcendent in the form of AI in which technology is perceived as godlike. On the other hand, AI fills a void in the religious lacuna that reaffirms the yearning for meaning and connection. Finally, the paper proposes the importance of the basic human nature of relationality in an age of simulated artificial reality.

Abstract

This study presents a pioneering dialogue between Karl Barth’s Christian theology and Islamic theological perspectives in the Indonesian context, focusing specifically on the concept of universal salvation. The primary interlocutors are Nurcholish Madjid, interpreting Ibn Taymiyya, and Karl Barth’s theology. Barth’s universalism envisions an inclusive future for humanity, elaborated in Barth’s exposition of the theme “Jesus is Victor,” suggesting a universal reprieve from divine eschatological judgment. Correspondingly, Madjid’s interpretation of Islamic theology proposes a universally hopeful future, recognizing the broad spectrum of divine revelation across various religious traditions, thereby fostering a sense of shared hope among diverse religious followers. Ibn Taymiyya, often misconceived as a figurehead for radical elements, is depicted in this essay as advocating a form of universalism where divine mercy ultimately triumphs over retribution. This article contends that this mutual anticipation of universal salvation can pave the way for meaningful Christian-Islamic interactions in the Indonesian milieu, contributing significantly to interfaith dialogue and understanding.

Abstract

Karl Barth's statement in his doctrine of Election regarding Jesus Christ being the subject and object of God’s election, sparked a conversation among Barth’s scholars in the academic world. This paper aims to show the dynamics of the debate and find the main points of the debate. Using a literature review method of the debates, it will be shown that there is an issue of God's freedom in unity between immanent and economic God. In this case, McCormack is able to offer God's freedom by uniting immanent and economic God.

Abstract

This paper explores the phenomenon of possession (kesurupan) from multiple perspectives, including theological, psychological, and cultural viewpoints. The study highlights how possession is understood and interpreted differently across various traditions, particularly within Indonesian culture. It examines the relationship between possession and spiritual beliefs, addressing both the communal and individual dimensions of the experience. The paper also delves into the psychological implications of possession, analyzing how mental health professionals approach cases of possession in contrast to religious practitioners. From a theological perspective, it is often interpreted as a demonic phenomenon, while empirical studies generally categorize it as a form of dissociative experience. By synthesizing these diverse perspectives, the paper aims to provide a synthetic understanding of possession, offering insights into its complex nature and the various factors that contribute to its manifestation. The study concludes with reflections on the implications for conversation  between religious and psychological perspectives for Christian ministry in Indonesia.

Abstract

In the modern era, the Lutheran tradition has recognized the need to enrich its theology to remain relevant to contemporary developments, one of which is through the exploration of pneumatological thought. As part of this tradition, GKPI also faces similar challenges. The enrichment of pneumatological theology in GKPI can be pursued by enhancing the comprehensiveness of its dogma or improving the effectiveness of its communication to the congregation. This study aims to understand the position of GKPI’s pneumatological thought in relation to these two aspects. Using a qualitative method, the study found that GKPI possesses a comprehensive pneumatological dogma. However, a gap exists between the dogma and the liturgy in use, indicating an ineffective communication pattern. This gap constitutes a crucial point for the enrichment of GKPI’s pneumatological theology.
