Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the use of naturalized borrowing technique in the translation of informative texts about digitalization in NADI magazine. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative. The German-Indonesian bilingual magazine NADI was the data source of this research. The data collected were words with the theme of digitalization in German that were translated into Indonesian using the naturalized borrowing technique. The researcher was the main instrument in this research and the documentation table was used as a data collection instrument with the reading and note-taking technique. The data analysis technique applied in this research was the Miles & Huberman (1992) model technique. The results show that there are 28 words translated with naturalized borrowing technique and classified into 11 sub-classifications, namely letter change (same sound), letter and sound change, suffix change -(t)ion to -si, change of suffix -ierung to -ization, change of suffix -ell to -al, change of suffix -isch to -is, change of writing -tät to -tas, change of suffix -mus to -me, double consonant, change of letter z to letter s, and omission of letter t at the end of the word. There are two main reasons for the use of naturalized borrowing techniques, namely the theme of the text which is closely related to technology, namely digitalization (Digitalisierung) and the familiarity and preference of language users.

Abstract

This article aims to describe the domestication and foreignization translation procedures used in Indonesian subtitles embedded in the film Im “Westen Nichts Neues”. This research makes an important contribution to the understanding of subtitle translation, and provides a basis for the use of foreignization and domestication procedures. The research was conducted using the descriptive qualitative method and the data was collected using the listen-read-write technique. The analysis technique used in this research is the Spradley model technique, which consists of four stages of analysis, namely domain analysis, taxonomic analysis, componential analysis, and cultural themes analysis. The research results show that the subtitle writer predominantly use the domestication procedure rather than foreignization. There are six translation techniques with domestication procedures that are most dominantly used by the subtitle writer, namely adaptation, transposition, modulation, amplification, reduction, and addition. These techniques were chosen to ensure the adaptation to the cultural context and space constraints of the subtitle so that the translation remains concise, clear, and has the same emotional impact as the original expression in the movie.

Abstract

Mandarin Chinese is considered one of the most influential languages in the world due to its significant role across various do-mains, including education, business, and culture. However, learners, particularly university students, often face challenges in mastering pronunciation, tones, and the complex Hanzi characters. Direct interaction with native-speaking instructors has proven to be an effective method for enhancing students' speaking abilities. This study aims to examine the impact of student interactions with native Mandarin-speaking lecturers on their speaking proficiency. Employing a quantitative approach, the study utilized Pearson correlation analysis and simple linear regression. The findings revealed a Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.943 and a significance level of <0.05 in the regression analysis, indicating a strong, positive, and significant relationship between the two variables. The more frequent and intensive the interaction, the greater the improvement observed in students' vocabulary mastery, pronunciation accuracy, intonation, and confidence. Furthermore, native-speaking instructors offer authentic learning experiences and broader cultural insights. Therefore, the involvement of native Mandarin-speaking lecturers is crucial in enhancing students’ Mandarin speaking skills.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the application of Skopos Theory by Vermeer Theory in translating elements of moral messages, symbolism, and culture in the short story Fatima und der Traumdieb by Rafik Schami. This research is a descriptive qualitative study involving 9 students of the Einführung in die Übersetzungswissenschaft course at the UM German Language Education Study Program as research subjects. The primary instruments were obtained through student translation tasks and analyzed using an interactive model, with the researcher serving as the main instrument and utilizing a documentation table. Findings indicate that while Skopos Theory facilitates more target-oriented and acceptable translations, 91 out of 162 translated items were found to be inappropriate. These inaccuracies stem primarily from students’ limited understanding of contextual meaning, pragmatic nuances, and grammatical structures. The study concludes that although Skopos Theory is effective in guiding the translation of literary texts, mastery of contextual and cultural understanding is essential to ensure accurate message delivery. It is recommended that additional translation training be provided, particularly in dealing with complex moral, symbolic, and cultural content.
