Abstract

Stream of consciousness is one of ways that is used by the narrator or the author of some literary works in directing the story. Atonement is one of great literary work that is created by Ian Mc’ Ewan in 2001. In this novel shown that the stream of consciousness technique is used as the tool in presenting the story. This way is important to make the story to be understandable for the readers especially for novels and short story. Such confusing thing when we are reading some literary works without having understanding about what we read. By using descriptive qualitative method, the researcher tried to find the kind of stream of consciousness that is used by the author in presenting the story of the novel. Classifying the quotation of the story of related novel is one of many ways that is chosen by the researcher in helping the analysis of this research to determine what kind of stream of consciousness technique that is commonly used in the story of Ian Mc’ Ewan’s Atonement. After having analysis over all of the related source in the story, the researcher found that there is a tendency of the author of Atonement in using the stream of consciousness technique in presenting the story. The used technique of stream of consciousness is included to the indirect interior monologue. As said by Bickerton (78), indirect interior monologue the type of interior monologue in which an omniscient author presents unspoken material as if it were directly from the consciousness of a character and, with commentary and description, guides the reader through it. It means that, the intervention of the author of Atonement is highly abided in the story line of the novel. Keywords: Stream of Consciousness, Atonement, Indirect Interior Monologue.

Abstract

The research entitled is The Struggle of Scarlet O’hara to Find Pure Love in Margaret Mitchel Gone With The Wind (1936). The aim of the study is exploring  the most dominat of Scarlet O’hara needs appering Gone With The Wind (1936) and to know the struggles of Scarlet O’hara in finding her needs in Gone With The Wind (1936). This research applied qualitative method. In this research the writer will describe the collected-data. The writer explore the protagonist character in the novel and use the concept of Abraham Maslow’s five basic hierarchy of needs especially focused on the struggle for love, affection and belongingness also self actualization needs. Based on the analysis, the researcher finds that Scarlet O’hara struggles to love, affection, belongingness and self actualization because she needs a man to be love, family’s affection and get many friends. The finding research can be stated that the most dominant of Scarlet O’hara needs  appering   Gone With The Wind (1936) is the needs of love, affection, and belongingness to make her life full of joy and happiness. Keywords : Struggle, Love, Affection, Belongingness

Abstract

This research was focused on descriptive research and analyze the relationship between the theme and the characterization of the major character looked from structuralism theory. The objective of this research is to describe the theme, the characterization of the major character, and the relationship between the theme and the characterization of the major character looked from structuralism theory. Data were collected by literature study such as: literature, books, references related to this research. The results of this research showed that the major theme of this novel is art as a mirror, there are some minor themes as add meaning: good vs. evil (physical and deeds), youth, vanity as original sin, mortality, morality and ethics, and friendship. The major character of the novel is Dorian Gray. The analysis of characterization which is used, is a dramatical characterization. The relationship between the theme and the characterization of the major character is very close. Dramatical characterization shows the characterization of the major character through four questions: What the major character done, What the major character said, How the major character faces problem, and How the other character judge the major character.Keywords: theme, characterization, major character, structuralism theory,   dramatic delineation
