Abstract

The urgency of education about bamboo in architectural education is closely related to various problems and contemporary phenomena in the field of settlement and the environment. As an environmentally friendly alternative material, bamboo has various potentials that are generally still underestimated by common people and society. Architecture education students and graduates have an important role in the exploration of this potential, as well as its dissemination to the public at large. However, positive changes and solutions to the problems above will not be achieved without serious efforts in architectural education to instill knowledge, abilities, and awareness about the potential of bamboo to their students. This research is an evaluation of bamboo education to architecture undergraduate students, especially in the Department of Architecture, UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang. An evaluation of the level of knowledge, abilities, and sensitivity of students regarding various bamboo potentials is carried out with the aim of formulating various strategies and learning methods that are more appropriate.

Abstract

This study concerns behavior setting and territoriality in Masjid Gading Pesantren as a part of the broader research on community based mosques and social interaction within them. The purpose is to identify some unique behavior patterns of the users of Masjid Gading Pesantren from the perspective of behavioral based research in architecture. The methods employed in this research are place-centered mapping, architectural documenting, and informal interview. The finding shows some specific behavioral pattern of the mosque’s users derived from the courtesy toward the mosque and the leader of the mosque as well as the pesantren. The behaviors form pattern as they become the tradition or local custom deriving into unique courtesy. Furthermore, this behavioral pattern also shapes the specific territories in the mosque, namely mihrab as a primary territory ‘owned’ by the kyai and legitimated by the santris. Such unique behavioral pattern belongs to local value which is largely accepted in Islam as long as it does not contradict with syariah.

Abstract

In this article, the writer tries to study architecture as a cultural product of a certain society because architecture is a representation of social life in eneral and individual. Therefore, studying architecture cannot be separated from the three basic elements, that is, concept, method, and performance. All of them are unified in value, need, and physical performance. Architecture is a part of culture composed from each element of culture itself and includes in the cultural system. The cultural elements included in architecture are concept, thought and rules, attitude and behavior as a social system. Both cultural system and social system build architecture as artefactual physical performance. The simplicity of Kampung Naga architecture shows the great value of the societys culture that is represented in its elements. Kampung Naga architecture also shows beauty coming from simplicity and humbleness. Beauty can appear from something parametrical or measurable and those non parametrical and immeasurable. Measurable things may be able to be seen physically, but the unmeasureable can only be felt. Architecture influenced by culture with its whole elements can raise behaviour patterns. Therefore, architecture should be built with the base and spirit of great culture to build great behaviour. Dalam artikel ini, penulis mencoba menjelaskan arsitektur sebagai produk budaya masyarakat tertentu karena arsitektur merupakan representasi kehidupan sosial di alam dan individu. Abstract

Islamic housing developments have been more popular in recent years, driven by a wide range of contributing factors, including religious, economic, and socio-cultural considerations. The widespread availability of Islamic mortgages from Islamic banks and finance institutions also contributed to the rise of the Islamic housing market for people looking to buy a house while complying with Islamic principles. One of the key selling aspects of Islamic housing projects is their notion of an ‘Islamic Environment,’ which implies sustainability in the social and natural environments. However, mass housing projects’ emphasis on market demands and financial viability often sets aside broader social and ecological considerations in their implementations. These phenomena have raised a question of how the Islamic housing projects conceptualized and implemented this notion of an ‘Islamic Environment.’ An exploratory study was conducted by analyzing qualitatively and quantitatively visual and text data from interviews, field observations, architectural drawings, and marketing materials. The findings showed that at the conceptual level, a partial understanding of Islamic values of environmental awareness is still the main issue that also impacted the implementations at the practical level. The understanding of the Islamic environment is limited to the socio-religious environment in the form of providing places of worship and religious activities. At the practical level, the selling point of the green atmosphere is still limited to the visual pleasures of the distant mountains and gardens outside the residential area. Hence, efforts to rethink the concept and application of the Islamic environment are imperative to ensure genuine environmental sustainability, and ‘nature’ transcends being merely a marketing strategy for Islamic housing projects. Keywords:housing projects, Islamic environment, sustainability, concept, implementation
