Abstract

Malnutrition and tuberculosis (TB) have a bidirectional relationship, in which poor nutritional status contributes to impaired immune function and disease progression. Subjective Global Assessment (SGA) is a validated clinical tool for nutritional assessment, while total lymphocyte count (TLC) reflects immune competence. This study aimed to investigate the correlation between SGA score and TLC among tuberculosis patients. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 34 adult TB patients attending the tuberculosis clinic at Universitas Sumatera Utara Teaching Hospital between October and December 2025. Nutritional status was assessed using SGA, and TLC values were obtained from medical records. Data were analyzed using Spearman’s rank correlation test. The median TLC was 1,873.64 cells/µL (range 742.72–9,874.23). Based on SGA classification, 29.4% of patients were well nourished, 44.1% were moderately malnourished, and 26.5% were severely malnourished. A statistically significant moderate positive correlation was observed between SGA score and TLC (r = 0.40; p = 0.019). Conclusion: There was a significant positive correlation between SGA score and TLC in tuberculosis patients. These findings highlight the importance of comprehensive nutritional assessment as part of integrated tuberculosis management to identify patients at risk of immune impairment.

Abstract

Malnutrition is a common complication in patients with cancer and is associated with poorer clinical outcomes.1 The Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) criteria provide an international consensus for diagnosing malnutrition.2 However, evidence regarding variations in malnutrition severity across different cancer types remains limited. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the association between cancer type and malnutrition severity defined by the GLIM criteria among patients with cancer undergoing chemotherapy. Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among adult cancer patients receiving chemotherapy at Prof. dr. Chairuddin P. Lubis Universitas Sumatera Utara Hospital, Medan, Indonesia, between October 2025 and January 2026. Nutritional status was assessed using the GLIM criteria. The association between cancer type and malnutrition severity was analyzed using the chi-square test. Results: A total of 107 patients were included. Lung cancer was the most common malignancy (42.1%), followed by breast (38.3%), ovarian (15.9%), and prostate cancer (3.7%). Overall, 46.7% of patients were malnourished, including 22.4% with moderate and 24.3% with severe malnutrition. The highest prevalence of malnutrition was observed in lung cancer patients (73.3%). A significant association was found between cancer type and malnutrition severity (p<0.001). Conclusion: Malnutrition is common among patients with cancer undergoing chemotherapy, and its severity varies according to cancer types.

Abstract

Maternal nutrition status during lactation plays an important role in supporting infant growth in early life through its influence on the quality and composition of breastmilk. However, evidence regarding tha association between maternal anthropometry and infant growth outcomes remains inconsistent across different populations. This study aimed to examine the association between maternal nutritional status and growth outcomes among infants aged <6 months. A cross-sectional analytic study was conducted among 56 mother-infant pairs in Medan,Indonesia, between September and November 2025. Maternal nutritional status was assessed using body mass index (BMI), while infant growth was evaluated using World Health Organization anthropometric indicators, including weight-for-age, length-for-age, weight-for-length, and BMI-for-age. Statistical analysis was performed using Spearman correlation. Significant positive correlation were observed between maternal nutritional status and infant weight-for-age (r=0.301; P=0.024), length-for-age (r=0.322; p= 0.0015), weight-for-lentgh (r=0.319; p=0.017), BMI-for-age (r=0.319; p=0.0017). Conclusion: Maternal nutritional status was significantly associated with infant growth indicators during the first six months of life. These findings highlight the importanace of maintaining optimal maternal nutrition during lactation to support healthy infant growth.
