Abstract

Happiness is the goal of the American dream; a means to reach happiness is wealth; in the following turn, wealth cannot be gained without optimism, opportunities, and hard work. Meanwhile, the massive use of conceptual metaphor raises the question of whether all of the domains, namely optimism, opportunities, hard work, wealth, and happiness were expressed in metaphor in the Great Gatsby whose theme is the American dream. The data collection technique was document analysis. The data were differentiated from the non-data, taxonomized, analyzed their components, and analyzed their dominance.  The results show that all domains of the American dream are expressed in all types of metaphors. Structural and ontological metaphors have slight differences in terms of sum. The orientational metaphor, however, has an extreme gap compared to the first two metaphors.Key words: American dream, metaphor, conceptual, expression

Abstract

A punch line is an unexpected and humorous conclusion to any show, situation, or story. This is the most crucial thing in humor. It must be retained in the translation. Therefore, the choice of translation technique must be more careful. This research was aimed at analyzing the type of translation techniques on each punch line in the Werewolves Within movie. In this research, the researcher applied Molina & Albir’s (2002) theory of translation techniques. This research was classified as descriptive qualitative research. The data collection technique is document analysis, namely by analyzing the movie subtitle entitled The Werewolves Within. The data analysis technique was ethnographic, namely by differentiating the data and non-data, taxonomizing them, analyzing their components, and analyzing their dominant findings. The results showed that ten out of twenty-four types of translation techniques were used in this research. The dominant type of translation technique was established equivalence, and the least one was addition, adaptation, implicitation, concision, particularization, modulation, and compensation. Each of them got one piece of data. Keywords: Translation Technique, Punchline, Subtitle

Abstract

Translation had become a part of our lives, especially in the movie industry. Translation was needed by those needing any help understanding the meaning. In translating language units such as words, phrases, and clauses, the translation techniques were needed. The assumption that subtitling needs space saving made reduction translation techniques were badly required. Reduction consisted of two types of translation techniques, namely concision and deletion. This research aimed to find language units from The Boss Baby movie subtitle translated with concision and deletion translation technique. This study was descriptive qualitative research. The data collection technique was document analysis. The data analysis technique was etnographic, namely by differentiating the data with non-data, taxonomizing the data, describing their components, and analyzing their cultural theme. The findings showed that language units that was translated with concision translation techniques are 35 data and deletion 23 data. The most dominant was concision. Myriad data about reduction conformed significantly the previous researches by Fitria (2015) about subtitling and Fitria (2018) about the translation of journal. Nevertheless, the findings did not conform the reduction in Prafitasari, et al., (2019) doing research on the poem translation.

Abstract

This research was to 1) To describe the types of metaphors in the song lyrics in the album entitled “Don Moen Open Worship”, 2) To analyze techniques used in the English-Indonesian metaphor translation of the song lyrics in the “Don Moen Open Worship album”. The data collection technique of this descriptive qualitative research was document analysis. The data analysis technique was ethnographic (Spradley, 2007), which was conducted by differentiating the data and non-data, taxonomizing them, analyzing their components, and analyzing their cultural themes. The results showed that all types of metaphors were found in the song lyrics, namely structural, orientational, and ontological. The most dominant type was structural because there were many metaphors whose meaning structures of the source domain were richer than the target domain. There were also various translation techniques of metaphor translation, namely established equivalent, explicitation, deletion, reduction, generalization, discursive creation, paraphrase, modulation, particularization, addition, implicitation, transposition, discursive creation + explicitation, and addition + particularization. The dominant type of metaphor translation technique was established equivalent. This was because most of the equivalents of metaphor translation were found in dictionaries and language use.
