Abstract

Young Adult fiction's popularity is at its peak right now due to the topic being related to the problems that teenagers are facing in today's era. One of those novels is Astonishing Color of After, a novel about the mother and daughter’s relationship between two generations, Dory with her mother, and Dory with her daughter, Leigh. This novel intrigues me to analyze the characteristics of Dory's and Dory's mother's parenting style, the influence of their parenting styles, and how it affects the mother's and daughter's relationship and their daughter's behavior problems. To analyze these three points, I will apply the authoritarian parenting style and permissive parenting style based on the types of parenting theory by Diana Baumrind. My analysis will show how Dory's and Dory's mother's parenting style is influenced by the culture and childhood trauma, and how their parenting styles affect the relationship between them and their daughter as well as their daughters' behavioral problems. This thesis will end with a conclusion that there is a line between when the parents become authority figures and when the parents become the companion of their children.

Abstract

This research paper focuses on the impoliteness strategies employed by the employees of Karen's Diner in serving their customers. Through this research, I would like to know how Karen's Diner’s employees apply impoliteness as a strategy in communicating with their customers and why they use the impoliteness strategies. To support this research, I use the theory of impoliteness by Jonathan Culpeper (1996, 2005, 2011). In this study, I discovered that Karen's Diner employees apply impoliteness as several strategies, including by rejecting customers, by ordering customers, by warning customers, and by insulting customers. In addition, I also discovered that the employees of Karen's diner use the four impoliteness strategies to entertain their customers that can be seen from the positive reactions given by customers to the impoliteness treatments from the employees such as saying that they enjoy being at Karen's Diner, they recommend other people to visit Karen's Diner, and they will return to Karen's DIner.

Abstract

This study aims to find out how verbal communication and visual signs in the "Sì" Giorgio Armani Perfume Line Advertisement reflect the value of liberal feminism. In conducting the study, I used Danesi's theory of Signs in semiotics (2004). This study was done using a qualitative approach in which I transcribed both the song lyrics and the narration that appeared in the video. I also captured the scene of the video to analyze the visual sign aspects. For this study, I analyzed the visual sign through the actress's body language, facial expression, and the color that often appeared in the video advertisement. The data finds that the "Sì" by Giorgio Armani perfume line advertisement uses the concept of liberal feminism to appeal to a modern and empowered audience of women. By incorporating messages of individual choice, empowerment, and self-affirmation, the advertisement positions itself as a brand that supports and celebrates the values of liberal feminism.

Abstract

This thesis explores how oppression and violent resistance are portrayed in the anime Cyberpunk: Edgerunners through the character of David Martinez. Using Iris Marion Young's "Five Faces of Oppression" and Frantz Fanon's theory of violent resistance is used for the analysis of how the oppressive conditions imposed by Arasaka Corporation lead David to walk the path of violent resistance as a means to reclaim his humanity and agency. I examine how David's story illuminates the dynamics of violent oppression and resistance. Analysis of David's character serves as a lens through which to examine the dynamics of oppression and resistance, explaining how his violent resistance not only breaks him from oppression but also inspires others to challenge oppression. The analysis finds four types of oppression that happen to David which are marginalization, victim of violence, cultural imperialism, and powerlessness. These oppressive conditions lead to two effects of David’s resistance which is David’s death and the rebirth of humanization.

200 Pounds Beauty (2006) is one of the popular Korean Romantic comedy films. It tells the story of Kang Hanna, a woman who faces societal discrimination due to her weight. This film explores her significant decision to undergo cosmetic surgery and the irony that her change does not make her completely happy. This study examines the causes and effects of Kang Hanna’s cosmetic surgery. The main theory for this study is the theory of body image. The findings show that Kang Hanna's negative body image and societal discrimination drive her decision to undergo cosmetic surgery. Additionally, it turns out that cosmetic surgery not only gives an initial effect on Kang Hanna but also further effects.

Abstract

In this thesis, I chose the movie titled The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian as my object of analysis. I choose this movie because it portrays the world of Narnia without Aslan. The topics addressed in this thesis are how Peter and Lucy perceive Aslan’s and how their perceptions affect their way of thinking. I use the perceptual cycle theory by Neisser (1976) which shows the process of perception and its impact on the decision-making process of Peter and Lucy. The findings of the analysis are that Peter and Lucy have different perceptions of Aslan’s absence because of the information modification in the schemata. Moreover, the analysis shows the impact of Peter’s and Lucy’s perceptions to their way of thinking in making choices. In conclusion, this analysis proves the importance of evaluating perception because of the danger it poses to one’s way of thinking in making a choice.
