Abstract

The production and use of a membrane filter made from bagasse (Saccharum officinarum) to filter ground water and peat water had been conducted. The purpose of this research are to evaluate the yield of membrane filter produced from bagasse, assess its ability to filter ground water and peat water as well as to measure the physical and chemical properties covering pH, turbidity and iron concentration, of those waters after filtered out with the membrane filter. Bagasse was used as a raw material for producing membrane filter through pulping process, followed by vulcanized fiber method using ZnCl2. From 100 g of bagasse, 38.7% membrane filter was produced. The membrane filter could increase ground water and peat water quality by increasing ground water and peat water pH from 6.7 to 7.2 and from 6.1 to 7.4 respectively. It also reduced ground and peat water turbidity from 48.33 to 1.67 NTU (96%) and from 65 to 2.67 NTU (96%) respectively. Iron concentration declined from 4.67 to 0.056 mg/L (for ground water) and from 3.645 to 0.121 mg/L (for peat water) respectively. Membrane filter produced from bagasse could improve ground and peat water quality after filtered out, whose physical and chemical properties met the quality standard of water according to Health Ministry Regulation of Republic of Indonesia No.492/Menkes/Per/IV/2010.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to improve learning activity and learning achievement of chemical education students in the odd semester who took the course Mathematics for Chemistry in the academic year of 2017/2018. This is a classroom action research consisting of three cycles, each of which includes planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. An observation sheet was used for collecting student and lecturer activities, whereas student achievement was collected using essay tests. The results show that the observation score for student activity for cycle 1, cycle 2, and cycle 3 were 20 (sufficient category), 25 (good category), and 27 (good category) respectively. Whereas, the average tests were 65.6; 80.4; and 81.3 for cycle 1, cycle 2, and cycle 3 respectively. It can be concluded that instruction of mathematics for chemistry courses aided by Microsoft Excel for students who took this course in the odd semester, the academic year of 2017/2018 could increase student learning activity and learning achievement. Abstract

Teaching style is one of the important factors that influence student learning motivation in the learning process. This study aims to determine the categories of teaching styles and student learning motivation, as well as the relationship between the two in chemistry learning in class XI MIPA at SMA Negeri 4 Kota Bengkulu. This study used a correlational descriptive method by distributing questionnaires to 220 respondents. The results showed that (1) the teaching style category of teachers in data group A was in the high category with a percentage of 75.15%, and in data group B, it was in the high category with a percentage of 76.67%. Teachers' teaching styles were analyzed based on indicators of voice variation, focus of attention, teacher silence, eye contact, body movements and facial expressions, and position changes. (2) The category of student learning motivation in data group A was in the high category with a percentage of 73.35%, and in data group B, it was in the high category with a percentage of 73.05%. Student learning motivation was analyzed based on indicators of desire and willingness to achieve, encouragement and need to learn, hopes and aspirations, independence in learning, perseverance in learning, and resilience in facing difficulties. (3) There was a significant positive relationship between teaching style and student learning motivation, with a low level of relationship strength in data group A and a moderate level of relationship strength in data group B.
