Abstract

The Quaternary deposits in the studied area comprises of river channel, floodplain, swampy which influence by rising and falling of lake level, lake, tidal-lake, and swamp deposits. These deposited separated by three depositional intervals (IP I-III). Vertically, the character of environment changing seems not gradually. These differences caused by dominant of tectonic effects. Therefore, climate was not important force in controlling the change of the environments. It’s mean, the sedimentary processes on the basin were under controlled by tectonic.

Abstract

The Quaternary sediments in the studied area can be divided into: (a)qollovial of basement rocks, (b)fine-grained of mass flows deposits, (c)coarse-grained of mass-flow deposits, (d)marine sediments, (e)beach deposits, (f)floodbasin deposits, (g)young marine sediments, and (h)marine Recent sediments. Furthermore, the Quaternary sediment consists of 2 (two) depositional cycles namely west Karimata cycle (SKB.1) and west Karimata cycle 2 (SKB.2).The development of the Quaternary sediments and basin fill in the research area was influenced by global events. Changes in climatological conditions between more humid and more dry, and relative sea-level changes affect marine and coastal depositional environments were included by global changes. The style of the mass flow deposits, is primarily the result of the palaeoslope on the basin, and lateral and vertical changes of environment systems were inflenced by regional or local condition of Sundaland character.

Abstract

The study of Quaternary deposits was conducted using analyses of sedimentology and stratigraphy of thirteen boreholes obtained along the west to the east traverse, which was approximately parallel to the valley of Duren river, not far from the Duren Village between Bikang and Gadung villages, District of South Bangka, Province of Bangka-Belitung. The depth of each borehole varies from 2.20 to 30.10 m.Studies on Quaternary deposits revealed five facies which represented, encompassing alluvial fan (FKa), river channel (FAs), floodplain (FDb), lake/lacustrine (FDn), and swamp (FRw) depositional environments. Based on the result of correlation of the lateral and vertical variation of the facies, four intervals of the deposition (IP I-IV) were recognised. Each of the interval exhibits the variation of the depositional environment under the control of tectonic and climatic changes. The tectonic activities and climatic changes which controlled the deposition were recorded as four episode stages. These respective episodes were, (1) dry climate with tectonic effects, (2) sub humid climate which was influenced by fault in the west, (3) humid to sub-humid climate which was followed by active of the three faults on the basin, and (4) dry climate without being influenced by tectonics.

Abstract

Studies of the Quaternary depositional cycles based on character of sea-level changes in the Krueng Aceh Valley ( Aceh Besar), revealed seven of depositional fasies. These depositional fasies consist of beach/ beach ridges (Fep/ Fepp), nearshore (Feldp), offshore (Fellp), river channel (Feas), floodplain (Fedb), swamp (Fer), and marsh (Ferb) deposits. Based on correlation of the lateral and vertical variation of the Quaternary deposits, four Interval of depositional facies (IFP A-D) occurred. Each of depositional facies is, characterized by variation of the depositional environment alternating which is controlled by sea-level changes under influenced by climate circulation and tectonic. Probably, the character of each depositional interval could be called as cycle of five ordo of sea level changes which correlated with Milankovitch cycle of 20,000 years. The study was based on analyses of sedimentology and stratigraphy of nine borehole informations, and the penetration of the bore head varied from 51,50 to 125 m. Three stratigraphical cross section have been correlated, that is BD2 – BD8, BD2 – BD5, and BD8 – BD5 cross sections.
