Abstract

This study aims at investigating how the usage of ‘smart tree’ manipulative media could support the first graders’ understanding of the addition concept. The research method is design research which consists of three stages, namely preliminary design, teaching experiment and retrospective analysis. The research subjects involved fifth grade students at an Islamic elementary school in Watampone in which 6 students were in the pilot experiment and 23 students involved in the teaching experiment. Data were collected through tests, interviews, documentation and field notes. The results shows that the implementation of Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) approach using ‘smart tree’ manipulative media could create a more enjoyable and meaningful addition learning for the first graders. The learning trajectory consists of two learning activities; organizing objects using familiar number/groups as well as doing addition activity using card game and smart tree manipulative media proved to be able to support students' understanding of the concept of addition from the informal level to the formal level. Keywords: addition; PMRI; smart tree; manipulative media

Abstract

Abstract

This thesis discusses efforts to improve fine motor skills through pattern-sewing activities for children aged 4–5 years at RA Tamoponreng, Macege Village, Tanete Riattang Barat District. The purpose of this study is to determine the fine motor skills of early childhood through pattern-sewing activities at RA Tamoponreng, Manurunge Village, Tanete Riattang Barat District. This study uses a quantitative approach with a Pre-Experimental Design, specifically the One Group Pretest–Posttest model. The research was conducted at RA Tamoponreng, Macege Village, Tanete Riattang Barat District, with a sample of 10 children. The study employed a pedagogical approach, and the data were collected through observation and testing. The data obtained during the study were analyzed using SPSS for Windows version 22 to determine the results of descriptive statistics for the pretest and posttest, as well as the paired sample t-test. The results show that pattern-sewing activities can improve fine motor skills in Group A at RA Tamoponreng, Macege Village, Tanete Riattang Barat District. This is evidenced by the t-test results for the pretest and posttest, where the significance value (2-tailed) of 0.000 < 0.05 indicates that H0 is rejected and H1 is accepted. Therefore, it can be concluded that pattern-sewing activities significantly enhance fine motor skills in children. Keywords: Fine Motor Skills, Pattern Sewing

Abstract

Fine motor development is a crucial aspect of early childhood development, influencing their ability to perform daily activities, such as writing, drawing, and operating small tools. In children aged 4–5, fine motor skills are still developing and require appropriate stimulation to optimize their abilities. At An Nuraisyah Kindergarten, several children exhibited delays in fine motor development, particularly in activities requiring hand-eye coordination, such as tearing, sticking, and holding writing instruments. This study aimed to examine the effect of collage and mosaic activities on the fine motor development of 4–5-year-old children at An Nuraisyah Kindergarten. Before treatment, the children exhibited delays in fine motor skills, particularly in activities involving hand-eye coordination, such as tearing, sticking, and holding writing instruments. This study used an experimental design with a pretest-posttest method, involving 19 children. The pretest results showed an average fine motor skill of 32.21, reflecting limited manipulative skills in the early stages. After being given collage and mosaic activities, there was a significant increase in children's fine motor skills, with an average post-test score of 79.68. Data normality tests indicated a normal distribution, while homogeneity tests and t-tests revealed statistically significant differences (Sig. <0.05). These findings indicate that collage and mosaic activities can be an effective learning strategy for optimally stimulating fine motor development in early childhood. The results of this study provide an important contribution to the development of more enjoyable and targeted learning methods for children in early childhood education. Keywords: fine motor skills, collage, mosaic, early childhood, creative learning, child development, hand-eye coordination.
