Abstract

The concept of sustainable port development is becoming increasingly important to apply due to abnormal conditions of global environmental change. This is because the port has an important role in the economic development of a country. To overcome environmental pollution originating from the construction and operation of ports, the concept of a “green” Port is a solution. Therefore, many researchers have studied the effect of “green” Port performance indicators with various approaches. This analysis focuses on evaluating “green” Port performance indicators based on a literature study. These studies were conducted in several countries, such as: China, Taiwan, Egypt, England, Singapore, and Turkey using a scoring system that combines AHP and fuzzy methods. The results show that all “green” Port performance indicators can be grouped into the following criteria: 1) air pollution management, 2) solid waste pollution management, 3) liquid waste pollution management, 4) air pollution management, 5) marine habitat protection, 6) Port staff management training, and 7) promotion of the “green” Port concept.

Abstract

Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA) is a method designed to evaluate system designs by identifying various failure modes of a system, which consists of multiple components, and analyzing their impacts on the system's reliability. The primary goal of FMEA is to identify and address key issues at every stage of the design and production process to prevent defective products from reaching customers, thereby safeguarding the company’s reputation. This study aims to identify the types of damage occurring in Kalmar-brand Rubber Tyred Gantry (RTG) equipment at PT. Kaltim Kariangau Terminal Balikpapan and analyze these failures using the FMEA method. Data collection was conducted through field observations, interviews, and documentation. The FMEA calculations also include repair recommendations for each identified failure. Based on the analysis, several failures were found to rank highest in severity for each piece of equipment. For RTG 07, the most critical failure was the "Trouble Hoist," requiring corrective actions such as repairs to the motor system, brakes, and gearbox.

Abstract

This research delves into strategies aimed at enhancing occupational safety and health practices within pilotage operations at Semayang Port, operated by PT. Pelindo Balikpapan. Given the inherently high-risk nature of port activities, particularly pilotage, ensuring the safety and well-being of workers is paramount. This research is motivated by the imperative to curtail workplace incidents and bolster operational efficiency through the implementation of robust strategies. A SWOT analysis was employed to comprehensively assess the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats inherent in the port's existing occupational safety and health system. The findings of this analysis revealed that a 'Turn Around' strategy, situated in Quadrant II of the SWOT matrix, presents the most viable course of action. This strategy effectively leverages external opportunities to mitigate internal weaknesses, thereby optimizing the overall safety and health posture. By adopting the 'Turn Around' strategy, PT. Pelindo Balikpapan is poised to elevate the standards of occupational safety and health within its pilotage operations at Semayang Port. Consequently, this is expected to lead to a reduction in accidents and a commensurate improvement in overall operational performance.

Abstract

The increasing trend of global trade and maritime supply chain has driven container terminals to pursue operational efficiency and equipment productivity. This study aims to evaluate the productivity of Rubber Tyred Gantry Crane (RTG) and Head Truck (HT) at Makassar New Container Terminal (Terminal 1), an important logistics hub in Eastern Indonesia. Productivity was measured through direct field observation and data collection during loading and unloading operations. Five RTGs and five HTs were analyzed for a period of one hour. The level of loading and unloading productivity at Makassar New Container Terminal (Terminal 1) is categorized as good according to the Regulation of the Director General of Sea Transportation. The productivity of RTG equipment with an average unloading process of 28 container boxes/hour and a loading process of 31 container boxes/hour. Meanwhile, for HT equipment, it reaches 5 container boxes/hour for the unloading process and 7 boxes/hour for the loading process. This analysis highlights the differences in handling efficiency between equipment types, emphasizing the need for equipment optimization. These findings contribute to understanding terminal performance and support future operational improvements.

Abstract

Modern agriculture faces serious challenges such as climate change, soil degradation, and dependence on chemical fertilizers and pesticides, which negatively impact the environment and human health. To support sustainable food security, innovative and environmentally friendly solutions are required. One promising alternative is the use of endophytic bacteria as biological agents to enhance plant growth without relying on synthetic chemicals. This study aims to examine the role of endophytic bacteria in organic farming systems through a combination of laboratory tests and field experiments. The research stages include isolation and identification of endophytic bacteria from plant tissues, testing the ability of the bacteria to support plant growth in vitro, and applying it to organic farmland to evaluate resistance to pests and crop yields. The independent variable in the study is the type of endophytic bacteria, while the dependent variables include plant growth rates, pest resistance, and crop productivity. Data analysis was performed using descriptive statistics and ANOVA, followed by post-hoc tests to determine the effectiveness of the treatments. The results showed that treatments with endophytic bacteria, both singular and combined, significantly improved vegetative growth, reduced pest attacks, and increased crop yields compared to the control. The combination of bacterial isolates proved to have a stronger synergistic effect than single treatments. These findings demonstrate the potential of endophytic bacteria as natural biofertilizers and biopesticides to support environmentally friendly organic farming.

Abstract

The concept of the smart city has emerged as a strategic response to rapid urbanization, increasing population density, and escalating environmental degradation. It is designed to create more efficient urban management through the integration of information and communication technologies, with the primary goal of enhancing public services, optimizing resource use, and improving citizens’ quality of life. One of its most significant promises is its potential to mitigate ecological challenges, particularly in monitoring and reducing air pollution levels. This study aims to analyze the impact of smart city implementation on urban ecology and quality of life, focusing on air quality as a key indicator. A quantitative comparative approach was applied, using both primary data from air quality measurements PM2.5, CO₂, NO₂, and AQI and secondary data from government reports, environmental agencies, and academic publications. The research was conducted in five major Asian cities recognized for adopting smart city initiatives. The results reveal varied outcomes: Tokyo and Kuala Lumpur demonstrated substantial improvements in air quality and livability, while Beijing and New Delhi continued to struggle with severe pollution. Jakarta showed partial progress, though improvements remain limited. These findings indicate that while technology is critical, it alone does not ensure ecological sustainability. Effective governance, public participation, and context-based strategies are equally crucial. This study highlights the need for smart city policies to prioritize ecological resilience and human well-being as central elements of sustainable urban development.
