Abstract

The opportunity to help students easily read English texts by observing content of the texts, which are construed in students’ world experience into limited set of processes type: material, mental, relational, behavioural, verbal and existential has confirmed the necessity of combating misunderstanding clause meanings (process, participant, circumstance). The notion of reading a text is manifested in the processes from a step-by-step lexico-grammatical analysis to contextual description, which are realised as a configuration of transitivity functions which represent the process, the participant situation, the attributes assigned to participant, and the circumstances associated with the process. These are typical patterns of lexico-grammatical realization. This study will examine the transitivity analysis, which provides the recognition of clause awareness on reading English texts. The implication of clause awareness on reading English texts based on the processes is to describe certain feeling, thought, and perception (perceiving through five senses) and creating an ordered technical vocabulary and way of classifying the world.

Abstract

Much research on language acquisition, from nativist to interactionist, describes Morpheme Order Studies as a major development in second language acquisition.  This paper intended to discuss how spoken data from a Japanese student could be used to indicate the level of acquisition of English morphemes attained via the processability theory but actually determined that an order of acquisition does not necessarily apply.  Results showed that the informant varied in success in supplying correct morphemes in obligatory contexts, that her first language did not interfere with her second language acquisition and the accuracy of using morpheme order sequence to determine the level of acquisition breaks down because learner’s developmental sequence is unpredictable.

Abstract

This research was conducted with the aim of exploring the level of openness and risk management abilities possessed by "X" University students in Malang City regarding the development of artificial intelligence (AI) technology in the millennial era. Using a quantitative approach and probability sampling method, 377 respondents became research subjects. The research results show that the majority of students show a sufficient level of openness (78.26%), although their risk management towards AI tends to be high (47.5%). Further analysis revealed that openness had a significant influence on students' risk management abilities (p < 0.05). In conclusion, these findings highlight the need for a balanced approach between openness to innovative technology such as AI and awareness of the importance of risk management in dealing with its impact, especially for academic communities such as students at "X" University in Malang City.

Abstract

This study proposes a pedagogical framework for integrating media discourse into English for Academic Purposes (EAP) instruction in large classes, grounded in Entman’s framing theory and Van Dijk’s critical discourse analysis. Using authentic texts on Indonesia’s austerity policy—specifically, the suspension of civil servants’ 13th and 14th salaries—the framework enhances students’ academic literacy, rhetorical awareness, and critical thinking. Over six weeks, learners engaged in discourse-analysis tasks, small-group discussions, and digital collaboration (e.g., Quizizz, Google Docs). Instruction focused on identifying framing elements (e.g., problem, cause, evaluation, solution) and linguistic features (e.g., modality, evaluative language, passive voice) to show how language shapes ideology. Data from reflections, discussions, field notes, and assignments were thematically analyzed. Findings showed students gained critical awareness of bias, expanded academic vocabulary, and improved syntactic control (e.g., nominalizations, passives). They also demonstrated stronger argumentation and rhetorical organization in essays and debates. The study presents a replicable model for critical, technology-enhanced EAP instruction that supports multilingual learners in higher education
