Abstract

The aging process has an impact on social, economic and health aspects of life. The presence of elderly people with all health problems causes a decrease in quality of life. One effort to overcome physical health problems, especially sensory organs, is by providing sensory stimulation activities to the elderly. Sensory stimulation activities by stimulating gustatory/oral motor, visual, olfactory, tactile, auditory, vestibular and proprioceptive. This study aims to determine the effect of providing sensory stimulation activities on the quality of life of the elderly. The research method was a pre-experimental one group pretest-posttest design with a sample size of 44 elderly people in the elderly community in RW 8 area of Kemiri Village, Kebakkramat, Karanganyar. Intervention by providing 10 sensory stimulation activities. Quality of life is measured by the World Health Organization Quality of Life (WHOQOL-BREF) before and after 8 section. The data analysis method uses Paired Sample T Test. The results showed Paired sample t-test Asmyp Sig. (2-tailed) = 0.000, which means that the p-value < α (0.05), which means that the Sensory Stimulation activity intervention has an effect on the quality of life of the elderly in the elderly community in RW 8 area of Kemiri Village, Kebakkramat, Karanganyar.

Abstract

Cognitive development in adulthood involves the ability to better integrate emotion and logic to make decisions and a reduced ability to process information quickly. In late adulthood, cognitive development is characterized by neurocognitive disorders, intellectual changes, and memory changes. When cognitive decline is regarded as a continuous process from normal cognitive function to mild cognitive impairment and dementia, the identification and management of influential factors such as cognitive decline-related demographic characteristics, comorbid diseases and health habits may contribute to the delay or prevention of dementia. Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (CST) is an intervention that aims to stimulate the cognitive function of middle adult individuals aged 50-60 years with cognitive activities. This study aims to determine the effect of Cognitive Stimulation Therapy on factors of cognitive function of middle adult individuals aged 50-60 years in Kemiri Village, Kebakkramat District, Karanganyar Regency. This research is a quantitative-research with a pre-experimental design with one group pre-post test. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling with a sample size of twenty-seven people. The instrument used was the Indonesian Version of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA-Ina). Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (CST) was carried out in 6 sessions over 8 weeks. Data analysis using paired t-test (paired t-test). Paired t-test results Sig. (2-tailed) = 0.000, which means p-value < 0.05, which shows that Cognitive Stimulation Therapy has an effect on the cognitive abilities of middle adult individuals aged 50-60 years in Kemiri Village, Kebakkramat District, Karanganyar Regency.

Abstract

Cognitive decline is a common condition among older adults that may affect memory, attention, and functional independence. Non-pharmacological interventions, particularly activity-based approaches, are increasingly recommended to maintain cognitive function. Board game–based cognitive stimulation has emerged as a promising, engaging, and accessible intervention within occupational therapy practice. This study aimed to examine the effect of a modified board game–based cognitive stimulation program on cognitive function among community-dwelling older adults. This study employed a quantitative pre-experimental design using a one-group pretest–posttest approach. A total of 50 pre-elderly and older adults were recruited using purposive sampling based on predetermined inclusion criteria. Cognitive function was measured using the Indonesian version of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA-Ina) before and after the intervention. The intervention consisted of a modified board game program conducted over eight sessions, each lasting 30–60 minutes, integrating cognitive tasks across multiple domains. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and paired sample t-test with a significance level of p < 0.05. The findings showed a statistically significant improvement in cognitive function after the intervention (p = 0.000, p < 0.05). Participants demonstrated increased scores across multiple cognitive domains following the modified board game–based cognitive stimulation program. The modified board game–based intervention was effective in improving cognitive function among community-dwelling older adults. This approach offers a practical, low-cost, and engaging strategy that can be implemented in community and occupational therapy settings to support cognitive health and functional independence in aging populations.
