Abstract

Physical and physiological health declined with age. These reduce activity ability. NCDs are also rising in elderly persons. Thus, increasing older adults’ physical activity reduces sedentary mortality and maintains health. The aim of this study is to explore the experience of Thai older adults participating in long-term exercise. A qualitative design was conducted with individual semi-structured interview online using voice calling via the LINE application. Three older adults aged 72-87. Participants explained their experience with their long-term exercise engagement. Data were analyzed using Colaizzi (1978) method. Four themes emerged from the data collection: (1) receiving support from society, (2) obtaining benefits, (3) understanding ageing demand, and (4) Engaging to be a habit. Motivation to exercise influences older adults' regularity. Extrinsic and intrinsic motivation affect exercise involvement. Older adults gain psychologically and physically from exercise. Personality and society also affect exercise motivation. The findings help older people, healthcare professionals, family members, and society understand geriatric exercise motivation to promote and execute exercise programs.

Abstract

Introduction: Little is known about the cognitive and emotional perceptions of patients with mild traumatic brain injury, although studies showed patients experiencing difficulties in cognitive functioning and psychological impacts following their injury. This systematic review aims to identify the current literature regarding illness representation dimensions in mild traumatic brain injury and their related factors. Methods: A search of electronic databases was completed using PubMed, CINAHL, Embase, and Web of Science, which were published from 2002 to April 2020. Studies were assessed for quality and bias, and data were analyzed using narrative synthesis. Results: The initial search yielded 155 studies, and ten were included. The results showed that patients had negative perceptions toward their mild traumatic brain injury. Some dimensions of illness representation were found to have relationships to their post-concussion symptoms, post-traumatic stress disorder, and quality of life of mild traumatic brain injury patients. Conclusions: The illness representations can be applied to such patients because it is able to explain symptoms and related factors that indicate their recovery process. The findings help trauma nurses to build interventions based on the dimensions of illness representations to generate appropriate perceptions after injury, and may to enhance the recovery process and outcomes.

Abstract

Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) frequently leads to post-concussion symptoms (PCS) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), both of which may hinder recovery if not identified early; however, research on these conditions remains limited. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of PCS and PTSD one month after mTBI and to describe demographic and clinical characteristics, including age, gender, education, employment, injury mechanism, and comorbidities. This study employed adescriptive observational design using descriptive statistics. A purposive sampling technique recruited 65 patients based on predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. PCS was measured using the Rivermead Post-Concussion Symptoms Questionnaire, and PTSD was assessed using the PTSD Checklist for DSM-5. Data were collected from August to November 2024 at Prof. Dr. R.D. Kandou Hospital, Manado, North Sulawesi. Descriptive statistics were applied to analyze PCS, PTSD, and demographic characteristics. The results reported that of 65 patients with mild traumatic brain injury (mean age 30.69 years, 67.7% male), most had >9 years of education (60.0%) and were unemployed (61.5%). Motor vehicle crashes were the leading cause of injury (46.2%). One-month post-injury, 33.8% experienced post-concussion symptoms and 21.5% reported symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder. Conclusion, PCS and PTSD are common in the early phase after mTBI, particularly among young men and those injured in motor vehicle crashes. These findings highlight the importance of early symptom recognition, patient education, and psychological support, as well as strengthened road safety measures to reduce the impact of mTBI.
