Abstract

This research is encouraged by the emergence of social friction due to different perspectives on religious issues in Indonesia. Some people clash religion with cultural rituals such as sedekah laut. At the same time, the others reject leaders from different religions and even desire to change the ideology into a caliphate system. Therefore, it is necessary to have a moderate attitude towards religion to create a peaceful and harmonious life. This condition can be found in Karimunjawa, where various ethnicities and religions live together but integrate to form a harmony. Thus, this research reveals the concept of religious moderation in Karimunjawa and how it is implemented through local traditions. The research problem was addressed through qualitative research using a case study approach. The results show that, although most Karimunjawa people do not possess a well-established theoretical understanding of the religious moderation concept, the practice of such concept can be observed in their everyday life. The implementation of moderation values is carried out from one generation to another through acculturation of local wisdom and religious values, such as in the barikan kubro, mudunke kapal, kumpulan, and sambatan. So far, there have been no obstacles in implementing religious moderation because it has become part of the tradition. Keywords: religious moderation, local tradition, Karimunjawa

Abstract

The Nahdlatul Ulama Jihad Resolution, which was proposed as an effort to seize and defend the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI) from the hands of colonialists, was based on the postulates of the Islamic religion which obliges every Muslim to defend the homeland and defend the independence of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia. The jihad resolution that was proclaimed immediately spread widely to society. In today's context, jihad, which is interpreted as a serious effort, can be widened in scope in terms of protecting all of Indonesia's blood from threats and exposure from extreme and radical groups through strengthening literacy or literacy jihad. Nowadays Islamic boarding schools as educational institutions which are one of the strongholds of the Republic of Indonesia have undergone changes in responding to the challenges of the times by incorporating information technology knowledge. This knowledge is an effort to develop general knowledge as well as the practice of using Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to equip students in this digital era. This is an effort to contextualize NU's jihad resolution in the modern era, namely jihad in the field of literacy to ward off radicalism.

Abstract

Religion is a sensitive issue that is easily brought up in Indonesia's pluralistic society. Moreover, minority groups sometimes feel they have less freedom of movement amidst various clashes with the customs and traditions of the majority. The dynamics between religion and custom must be addressed wisely and judiciously by all elements of society to form a harmonious, peaceful life in a pluralistic society. This requires sensitivity between religious communities to tolerate each other's customs and traditions without sacrificing their own beliefs. So, there will be excellent synergy between religion and custom. Conditions like this can be found in the Muslim community of the Balinese Pegayaman village, whose position is a minority but can integrate with local regional customs which are very strongly Hindu. This form of synergy between religion and customs in Muslim society in Bali is very interesting to research, as an example for a pluralistic society as well as a means of introducing customs and traditions through scientific publications. It turns out that the key to the synergy between religion and custom that is very well formed lies in the emotional sensitivity to respect and love each other and maintain traditions by internalizing religious values. This can be seen in the unique naming of the Muslim community, where they add family names according to Balinese traditions such as Wayan, Putu, Gede in front of their names which have Islamic nuances.
