Abstract

The existence of the PCTA-I (Persaudaraan Cinta Tanah Air-Indonesia/Brotherhood for the Love of Indonesia Homeland) plays a pivotal role, especially for underprivileged people regardless of their religion and faith, tribe, and race. This organization has been, therefore, undeniably desirable to help the Indonesian society overcome their social problems. Focusing its discussion on the PCTA-I, this article seeks to answer such questions as how this organization has been initiated; what does it do to help overcome national problems, and what are the obstacles it faces in implementing the programs and how does it overcome such obstacles? A number of leaders and members of the PCTA-I Central Board have been interviewed. The murshid of the Tarekat ?idd?q?yah has been among the main informants of this study. Employing qualitative approach by focusing on interview, questionnaire, and documentation as the sources of data, the study indicates that the PCTA-I has been able to efficiently implement its programs due to solid participation and robust support of its voluntary community. Through its programs, the PCTA-I attempts to build what so-called ?the soul of society? in order to achieve civilized and enlightened future of Indonesia.

Abstract

Plurality of ethnicities, religions, and cultures is Indonesian historical facts. Diversity can be a gift or a disaster. If properly managed it can enrich human lives; on the contrary, if not properly managed it can lead to disaster in the form of tension, conflict, and violence. The function Islamic Education as a subject that is still preserved in the National Education System is expected to shape the character of students, so that they become Muslims who fear (in the sense of obedience to Allah),and at the same time be a citizen of Indonesia that is tolerant, accepting the condition of multi-cultural, and reject all forms of oppression that degrades human dignity. It specifically can be seen from learning objectives, that is to realize the Indonesian people who are religious, noble, knowledgeable, diligent to worship, intelligent, productive, honest, fair, ethical, disciplined, tolerant (tasamuh), maintaining harmony and developing religious culture at school. Philosophically, Islamic education is relevant to and an integral part of the national education system. The position of Islamic education as a subsystem of national education serves not only as a supplement, but as a substantial component. It means that Islamic education is a crucial component of national educational journey. Since the government has proposed the concept of multicultural education, civic education, and character education, then it cannot get rid of Islamic education.

Abstract

Islamic education is often claimed to fail in improving the character of the nation. This is due to the increasing number of social cases that occur and all of them are rooted in the decline of moral quality and character of the nation. In fact, there are still many Islamic education institutions that emphasize their tarbiyah aspects without compensating for the quality of their preaching. Whereas Islamic scholarship in nature does not recognize the existence of scientific dichotomy, as is the majority of western scientific products. Muslim thinkers themselves have offered many concepts of scientific integration, such as the thariqah al-ankabut theory of Amin Abdullah. This article aims to explore the reorientation of Islamic education to synergize the aspects of tarbiyah and da'wah as an alternative answer to various social problems. This article used a qualitative library research with the hope that a more comprehensive synthesis of thought will be produced on how important the reorientation of Islamic education is. This article concludes that social problems must be overcome from the root, namely the quality of faith that manifests in character in community life. Therefore, Islamic education must be integrative, so there must be harmonious synergy between tarbiyah orientation and da'wah. This is so that the output of Islamic education is truly capable of animating and authenticating the unity of Islamic scholarship which is integrated in all aspects of life. Good cooperation is needed among all stakeholders to realize the reorientation of Islamic education, due to the increasing diversity of social problems.
