Abstract

After the governor of Aceh signed the Bylaw no 3/2013 on Aceh’s flag and symbol, the dispute between the local government of Aceh and the government of Indonesia over the adoption of the former separatist group’s flag as the provincial flag erupted. Unlike other studies investigating the way media frame the dispute, the study aims to examine how Serambi Indonesia, the most prominent newspapers in Aceh, used symbolic language in the Aceh’s flag coverage to give meaning to a collective identity within Acehnese society as a flag is regarded as an identity symbol. The sample of news articles was gathered from http://aceh.tribunnews.com within the period from December 2012 to May 2013. The total of 17 news articles was analysed with Gamson and Modigliani’s framing devices. Findings reveal that Serambi Indonesia delivered a conciliatory representation of Acehnese political identity by using flag metaphors, nationalist exemplars, middle ground catchphrases, and ethnocentric depictions.

Abstract

Liverpool F.C., one of the clubs in the Premier League, actively supports the LGBT campaign through social media, including Instagram. In Indonesia, the club is supported by BIGREDS, an official fan community that serves as a social and communicative bridge between Indonesian supporters and Liverpool F.C. This study aims to examine the reception of the BIGREDS Aceh community towards Liverpool F.C.'s LGBT support campaign on Instagram. This phenomenon is intriguing due to the value clash between the campaign and the religious and cultural norms in Aceh, which strongly upholds Islamic law. The theoretical framework used is the Reception Theory, which enables the analysis of message reception from dominant, negotiated, and oppositional readings. The study employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. Data were collected through interviews with five members of the BIGREDS Aceh community as informants selected through purposive sampling. The findings of this study indicate that all informants fall into the category of Oppositional Reading. The informants actively reject the LGBT campaign and feel that the message is not aligned with their social environment. The BIGREDS Aceh community holds a negative view and adopts an Oppositional Reading stance regarding the campaign. Liverpool F.C.'s support for LGBT is considered inconsistent with religious values and social norms prevailing in Aceh. However, the community continues to support Liverpool as a football club by separating the club’s social agenda from its sporting achievements. This study provides insights into how society, particularly football fan communities, respond to sensitive social issues.
