Abstract

Abstract This article examines the steps taken by Sultan Abdul Hamid II in narrowing the political influence of secularism within the Ottoman Empire. The secularism that occurred in the Ottoman Turks strengthened after the Tanzimat in 1839, this condition caused the decline of the spirit of Islam and the inclusion of westernization influences in Ottoman Turkey both from a social and political perspective. Seeing the growing secular political turmoil, Sultan Abdul Hamid initiated several ideas such as; Pan-Islamism, strengthening the supremacy of intelligence, and politics of compassion, these ideas were de-secularization movements in their era. The research method used in this study is a historical research method, with a social and political approach. The steps of the historical method are; heuristics, criticism, interpretation, and historiography with these steps make this article credible and comprehensive. There are findings in this article that the steps taken by Sultan Abdul Hamid succeeded in suppressing the rate of secularism in Ottoman Turkey so that the Ottoman Turks were able to make pro-Islamic policies and were not influenced by the West.
