Abstract

This paper explores the ideas of Islam, Indonesian-ness and humanity in thecontext of a neo-modernist thinker of Islam Indonesia, Ahmad Syafii. Histhoughts on Islam are the results of his understandings of the role of ethicsof the Koran in shaping attitudes and behavior of Muslims. Therefore, theimpressions of peaceful and dynamic value become values that should begrounded in humanity and Indonesian-ness.

Abstract

The relation between science and religion in the recent years is still interesting to study. The long history ofboth sides had created complex relation, harmony and disharmony. Nevertheless, the issue concerning relation between science and religion is not always created by conflict and tension. Many individual tries to connect them and the other supposes that there is no connection between them; both are different entities, having separate territory as a formal-material object (ontology), research method (epistemology), and their role (axiology). This writing tries to elaborate methodologically a scientist thought, Ian G Babour, which is brilliantly propose a relation pattern that can explicate the relation between science and religion, i.e. in form of conflict, independent, dialogue, or integration. From this fourth relation, Ian G Babour takes his place in position of dialogue and integration.

Abstract

This article attempts to describe the existence of the Kitab Kuning (Arabic Book) as a legacy of Islamic scholarship literacy which has an intellectual connection with earlier scholar and to see the contextualization of Islamic law in Nusantara. By Examining many library books related to the topic, including the work of Nusantara scholar, this article uses historical reviews and analyze it critically.The result shows that the existence of Kitab Kuning is not only to conserve and preserve the heritage of Islamic scholarship but also to be a signifier of one's intellectual capacity in understanding, interpreting and contextualizing the principles of Islamic law in order to respond social and cultural change. On the other hand, the contextualization of Islamic law in Nusantara is carried out in several ways; translating the works of jurisprudence, writing a commentary (syarḥ) from a prominent jurisprudence and writing his own works by keep referring to the authoritative sources of the Islamic school of earlier scholarly work.

Abstract

"Pribumisasi Islam" is a term used by Abdurrahman Wahid (Gus Dur) for  contextualisation of Islamic doctrine in Indonesia. It's also equally used as  counter of discourse of "Arabization" (Arabic oriented) of religiousity that  tends to formalize of religion and lacks of it's progressivity. In order to the  grasp deep meaning of the doctrine, therefore, Gus Dur develops new models  of interpretation based on cultural that will r-glue to roots of tradition. So universality values of Islam, then, fuse with locality values. This unity make a  tranformative combination of understanding contextuality of doctrine.

Abstract

Virginity becomes a complicated discourse for women. It is a holiness and glory in religion and ethic, nevertheless hiding discriminated contruction for the owner. It is more grinding, when myth and medic contribute creating power-knowledge to confirm sexuality violence for this context be undisputed answer and looking at virginity as self-identity of women which must be disciplined, controlled and normalisized along time. This article attempts to describe existing concept of virginity in the mythic, medical, and Islamic discourse by using social-critics perspective as an analysis. The result shows virginity, in the mythical discourse, emerging double-ethic standard which difference between male and female. While medical discourse trys to create ‘virginity detection’ for women as control and supervising form. Interpretation, and then, of religious doctrine legitimates by which misogynic understanding tend to weakness women existing. And the end of all, virginity discourse emerges sexuality violence for women.

Abstract

This article seeks to describe the meaning of Islam by millennials in the public sphere, by focusing on three things, they are how the emergence, response, and resilience of millennials in expressing their Islam in public cafes and mosques. By using a qualitative approach, recollecting data were based on observations, interviews with managers and staff/follower as well as important documents. This data, then, is analyzed critically and descriptively. This study obtains two main findings. First, Islamic expressions in public cafes caused the problem of market-oriented economic capitalism and not educating for the benefit wider community, so managers try to raise capital through investment from pesantren alumni as an economic and social modality as well as by offering a menu of sorogan kitab (pesantren book), selawatan, and scientific activities as priority marketing to attract consumers. This strategy is also resilient in strengthening the company profile of the cafe. Second, the expression of Islam in the mosque is aimed at reviving the house of God, takmir joint with national ustadz (preacher) such as UAS, Sugik Nur, and Hanan Attaki to recruit worshipers as well as to introduce Islam more radically to urban communities. Islamic learning focused on faith and ubudiyah holding on routinely after maghrib and subuh prayer, and "sajadah fajar" (down mat) program for shaping other mosques the same as theirs.
