Abstract

There are many on-line applications of CALL that can be used in the English language learning classrooms. These applications have a lot of advantages despite their barriers. Through the use of CALL, English learners are expected to be able to communicate across languages and cultures. It lets learners of a language communicate inexpensively with other learners or native speakers. Using CALL, teachers are not the only source of information any more, but act as facilitators. Moreover, students become active learners and they are encouraged to be explorers and creators of language rather than passive recipients. Therefore, this paper will review and discuss using internet in the classroom, in particular CALL, the benefits of employing CALL, the barriers that CALL presents in our language classroom, and the guidelines of using internet in the classroom.

Abstract

This research aimed to find out the correlation between reading anxiety and reading achievement in senior high school level. The researcher used correlational study as the type of research. The population of this research was the eleventh grade students of Madrasah Aliyah Miftahul Khairiyah Banjarbaru in the academic year of 2015/2016. The number of the population was 53 students. To analyze the data, the researcher used pearson product moment correlation in Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) version 21.0. The result showed that that the coefficient correlation between both variables was -0.128. It showed that there was no significant correlation between students’ reading anxiety and their reading achievement. It is also found that 18 students belonged to high level reading anxiety, 33 students had moderate level of reading anxiety, and 2 students were categorized into low level. For level of reading achievement, 2 students were in very good category, 21 students were in good category, 23 students had fair reading achievement, and 6 students had bad reading achievement. Though the study found no correlation between the two variables, it still found that reading anxiety existed in senior high school level. Accordingly, it is suggested that the students have to encourage themselves to overcome the anxious feeling that they have when they are reading English in order to make reading comprehension easier for them. It is also suggested to the teachers to give the students more reading strategy in order to overcome their problems causing reading anxiety.

Abstract

Learning which is carried out online due to the Covid-19 pandemic has forced various parties to make many adjustments. English teachers have been trying to adapt to learning condition in this New Normal Era. Various obstacles that had occurred include learning media and assessments that were dominant, monotonous and made students felt bored, absorption of subject matter, which was very minimal and led to learning loss, and the implementation of Daily Assessments (DA) which became less integrated. Based on these problems, a simple learning alternative based on Microsoft PowerPoint was developed as part of technology-based learning that can be used for learning and assessment outside or inside the classroom. In this respect, the training on making and using Flipped Material was one of the solutions offered to high school English teachers of the same level in Banjarmasin. The fundamental contribution to the target audience, the participants of this community service activity- English teachers of Senior High School, is the increased ability to create and use Microsoft PowerPoint-based Flipped Materials that can be used for the assessment of English reading skills. This community service activity was in great demand by the participants as seen from their enthusiasm in participating in the training and the desire for similar training to be held on an ongoing basis. Through this community service activity, the participants, namely English teachers, are expected to be able to re-practice the knowledge and skills acquired in making Microsoft-PowerPoint-based Flipped Materials to improve their students' reading skills.

Abstract

Reading is a critical component of academic life. Undergraduate students' course success depends much on how they process their reading. However, some studies show that students face difficulties in their reading in several terms. These difficulties are twofold for English as a Foreign Language students who have to deal with reading and language content. In this respect, students must be able to self-regulate their reading activities in and outside classrooms. This study was intended to investigate the students' levels of self-regulated learning in reading comprehension. This study used a cross-sectional design with 40 English Language Education Study Program students at Universitas Lambung Mangkurat. The instrument was a questionnaire adapted from Zimmerman's Academic Self-Regulated Learning Scale (2000). The questionnaire was distributed online to the students using Microsoft Forms. The data were analyzed using a t-test. The findings show that the ways both groups of students regulate their cognitive processes, motivation, and behavior within an educational setting are similar. Nevertheless, concerning that the fourth-semester students might be more organized SRL students than the second-semester ones, reading instructions must be structured to develop students' self-regulated learning. In other words, lecturers should condition the instructions to enhance the students' self-regulation

Abstract

This study aims to find out dominant factors that play a role in students’ intrinsic and extrinsic motivation in reading English text Reading plays an essential role in language learning, particularly for EFL students. Students read English texts whether for academic purposes, gaining information, or for pleasure. To have excellent reading skills, students need to have the motivation to read various kinds of reading material. Motivation has long been identified as one of the main factors affecting English language learning. Some students are motivated to read in English intrinsically and extrinsically. This research is a quantitative descriptive study. The participants are 86 students of ELESP Lambung Mangkurat University Batch 2021. The researchers use total sampling because the total population is less than 100. A questionnaire is used as the instrument in this research. The result shows the factor that plays the most role in extrinsic motivation is grades and the lowest is social sharing. Meanwhile, the factor that plays the most role in intrinsic motivation is curiosity and the lowest is preference for challenge. Furthermore, students are found more motivated extrinsically in reading English rather than intrinsically motivated.

Abstract

English teachers have to use the best reading teaching techniques to make their students improve their reading skills to understand an English text or the written language. Since reading is not an easy skill to master, teachers need to choose appropriate reading techniques that help the students improve their reading skills to comprehend the English text they read. This research aims to discover the techniques used to teach reading skills in senior high school classes. The techniques are explored through the research articles written by previous researchers on this topic. This study employed a systematic analysis method that identifies existing articles that are available online. The research reviewed 20 articles on the research topic, which were collected from Google Scholar. This research highlighted four teaching techniques frequently mentioned and suggested as effective in teaching reading skills. They were: Think-Pair-Share, reciprocal teaching, mind mapping, and Question-Answer Relationship (QAR). These techniques have been proven effective in improving students’ reading comprehension. These techniques are, of course, not without shortcomings. Thus, teachers need to pay attention to the situation of their classes in choosing appropriate techniques, especially in teaching reading skills. Implementing the appropriate techniques brings instruction to life while encouraging students to actively engage in class.

Abstract

This research aims to discover the levels of EFL students' critical thinking skills. It is a quantitative approach with descriptive design by utilizing the adapted version of the Watson-Glaser Critical Thinking Skills Test as the instrument. It consists of five indicators: deduction, inference, identifying assumptions, interpretation, and analyzing arguments, with five questions for each. The subjects of the research were 33 students of the English Department of FKIP, Lambung Mangkurat University. The results showed that 23 students (69.69%) had a moderate level of critical thinking skills, seven students (21.21%) had a low level, and three students (9.09%) had a high level. Specifically, they performed low levels in inference and identifying assumptions, but they had moderate levels of critical thinking skills in deduction, interpretation of information, and analysis of arguments. These findings imply the need to facilitate students with more practice to develop their critical thinking skills, particularly in making inferences and identifying assumptions. Further research is recommended to measure EFL students' critical thinking skills by involving larger participants using other instruments of measurement to reveal more conclusive findings.

Abstract

This study aims to develop a prototype learning model based on self-regulated learning for students who study English at Junior High School, and find effective strategies to support teachers in adopting and adapting self-regulated learning-based learning in their English classes. The era of globalization requires mastery of English language to access global information, communicate among countries, and increase competitiveness. The 2045 Golden Indonesia Vision [5} also emphasizes the importance of developing the quality of human resources, including English language. However, data show that Indonesia English language proficiency is still low according to EF English Proficiency Index. Also, one of the main challenges is the very limited use of English language in daily life. The conditions mentioned above are challenges for the autonomous learning of high school students. Therefore, a teaching and learning model facilitating students with the ability to systematically manage their learning process is really needed to achieve their learning goals. The components of SRL include cognitive strategies, beliefs and motivation, and resource management. The self-regulated learning-based learning model is seen as the right solution to improve students' self-regulated abilities in learning English language. This learning model follows a three-phase cycle model which includes the Forethought phase, the Performance phase, and the Reflection phase. Developing the prototype of a Self-Regulated Learning-Based Learning Model for Junior High School English participants follows the ADDIE Model. This development model has 5 stages: Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation and Evaluation. However, there are only three stages of the ADDIE Model implemented in the research, namely Analysis, Design, and Development. Through this study, the prototype of a SRL-based Learning Model is developed. The implications of this prototype are (1) teachers becoming more aware to facilitate students’ learning English with learning strategies, and (2) students are rather more goal and strategy-oriented since they implement the SRL in order to get better achievement.
