Abstract

In communicating, the speaker better uses polite language, because it will maintain speaker’s dignity and respects the hearer. Further, it can create smooth and pleasant communication. The purpose of this study is to find a forms of language politeness and their meaning in conversations among eight semester students of STKIP PGRI Ponorogo in 2019. This research is a descriptive research that uses a qualitative approach. The data collection method used in this study is the observation method. In this study, each speech is analyzed based on the theory of politeness from Leech (in Rahardi, 2005: 59) as follows: tact maxim, generosity maxim, approbation maxim, modesty maxim, agreement maxim, and sympathy maxim. As a result, the researcher found nine tact maxims, two tact maxim violations, one approbation maxim, two sympathy maxims, one sympathy maxim violation, two generosity maxims, nine consensus maxims, and three modesty maxims.

Abstract

Language is used by human to communicate and interact each other.Due to the importance of language use in society, pragmatics become an important analysis part One of the studies in pragmatics discusses about the language politeness. This research focused on the principle of language politeness using Geoffrey Leech’s theory, six maxims, namely the tact maxim generosity maxim, Approbation Maxim, Modesty maxim, Agreemen maxim, Sympaty maxim. This study aimed to describe the strategy of language politeness in the film Assalamualaikum Calon Imam. The method used in this research was descriptive qualitative. This study decribed the principles of politeness in films. The object of study in this research was film. The data used in this study were the utterances of the main and supporting characters in the film. The research results that the six maxims were spoken by the main character and the supporting character. The conclusion of this research was that the film players obey the politeness strategy in the form of maxims. There are six maxims obeyed in the speech, namely maxim generosity maxim, Approbation Maxim, Modesty maxim, Agreemen maxim, Sympaty maxim.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the interesting use of word choice or diction and figurative language used by Ungu band. For this reason, this study aims to analyze the use of diction and figurative language contained in the album Untukmu Selamanya. The method used is descriptive with a literature review design. Data are collected by using the note-taking technique. The data are analyzed by employing descriptive technique including the following steps; data selection, coding, data classification, data description, and data interpretation. The data source of this research is the three song texts on the album Untukmu Selamanya by Ungu band. The result of the analysis shows that the majority of the diction contained in the song is connotative. This is a manifestation of the song composer’s creativity when creating lyrics. Another finding is the use of figurative language, synecdoche and simile with the theme of romance and sadness.

Abstract

Literary works are the result of the author’s imaginative thoughts or creations that display human life. Literary works in all its forms are commonly colored by the attitudes, beliefs and backgrounds of the authors. This article aims to describe the personality of the main character in the novel Sirkus Pohon by Andrea Hirata. The personality that is the focus of the analysis is divided into two domains, namely personality in the realm of consciousness and personality in the realm of the unconscious. This research method is descriptive qualitative with a text study design (library research). To analyze, the researcher used the basis of personality theory that was promoted by Gustav Jung. The data collection procedure was carried out by reading, listening, and taking notes. The data obtained in the form of words, phrases, sentences obtained from the object of research. Based on the results of the study, the main character in the Circus Tree novel has an honest awareness, does not want to be deceived, falls in love, is angry, is firm in his stance, has sharp intuition, is friendly, easy to get along with. Meanwhile, the personality in the unconscious level of the main character are easily influenced, nervous, believes in shamans and believes high school graduates are better than elementary school graduates.
