Abstract

The crossword puzzle method is utilized to enhance English vocabulary proficiency among employees of a local financial agency named LPD (Lembaga Perkreditan Rakyat) which is located at Guwang Village, Gianyar Regency. This research adopts a qualitative approach combined with a case study model and a pre-experimental design to assess the method’s effectiveness. 15 employees with diverse educational backgrounds, ranging from high school (SMA), vocational school (SMK), diploma, to bachelor’s degree are participated in this research. This research applied crossword puzzle set as the instrument which contained of 20 English financial glossaries. The data collection was conducted through the distribution of questionnaires and preliminary interviews to assess the employees’ understanding of banking terminology in English before and after the training. Data analysis was performed using an interactive model that includes three main stages: data collection, data analysis, and conclusions. The results showed that the crossword puzzle method is fruitful in enhancing employees’ interest in actively learning English vocabulary. Furthermore, the method also expanding their confidence in using English, especially in the context of banking terminology. The evaluation results revealed that 4 employees (27%) only mastered fewer than 10 vocabulary items after the training (Category A), 5 employees (33%) mastered between 10 to 15 vocabulary items (Category B), and 6 employees (40%) successfully mastered more than 15 vocabulary items (Category C). These findings indicate a significant improvement in vocabulary mastery, although there are still differences in the level of proficiency among the participants. Overall, this method has a positive impact on employees’ English vocabulary mastery, particularly in banking terms, and has the potential to be applied more widely in other workplace settings.

Abstract

Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) is a student-centered approach designed to enhance language proficiency through meaningful, real-world tasks. This study investigates the implementation of TBLT to improve grammar usage, particularly the past tense, in a speaking context. The research targets first-semester pharmacy department students at Mahaganesha University. A mixed-method approach is employed, incorporating quantitative data from questionnaires and qualitative insights from interviews, with a sample of 30 participants. The study examines the effectiveness of TBLT in addressing grammar proficiency challenges and offers educators practical strategies for integrating task-based methodologies. Preliminary findings are anticipated to reveal significant improvements in students' ability to apply grammar in communicative contexts, contributing valuable insights to language instruction practices

Abstract

It has been researched in some studies and related theories confirming that using picture in teaching English vocabulary was very effective. Especially for young learner in elementary school which has Bahasa Indonesia as their main language, the vocabulary problem used to occurred in spelling, pronunciation, grammatical use, and meaning. Those language aspects become main obstacle for them. This research explores the implementation of English vocabulary and to find out the score improvement in using picture in learning process. The objective of this research is to find out the effectiveness of picture in improving students’ vocabulary. The research is conducted in Santo Yoseph 1 elementary school Denpasar in the class of 3B .It was conducted in two cycles to twenty-seven participants. Instruments used were tests, questionnaires, and observation. Results showed that an initial vocabulary mastery was 75.6 points, and increased to 86.08 in the final cycle of the study. In the same way, the questionnaire results in the second cycle revealed that although the students still found English learning (85.50) and memorizing vocabulary (70.37%) difficult, their interest in learning it increased (59.26% from 29.63%). Finally, the observation results of the second cycle also showed the improvement of both students’ and teacher’s teaching and learning atmosphere as well as interest. However, a further study and learning policy are worthy to assure the application of the pictorial aids facilitating the attractive and motivating learning atmosphere in the future.
