Abstract

The role of the young population is crucial in maximizing the demographic bonus. It is necessary to pay attention to the education and employment absorption of young people. The NEET indicator can be used to asses the youth situation. In 2021, Indonesia's NEET rate was 22.4 percent, higher than most Southeast Asian countries. Most NEET studies primarily focus on individual characteristics, but NEET can also be influenced by spatial effects. This study aims to obtain an overview, identify spatial effects, and analyse the determinants of the NEET rate in Indonesia using the spatial durbin error model (SDEM). The findings reveal that the NEET rate is directly influenced by employment opportunities, net secondary school enrollment rate, percentage of people with disabilities, percentage of in-migrants, and the human development index. Additionally, the NEET rate is indirectly influenced by employment opportunities, the percentage of young married women, and the percentage of in-migrants.

Abstract

Nickel ore is a highly potential mining commodity, evidenced by the fact that 52 percent of the world's nickel reserves are located in Indonesia, and in 2021, Indonesia became the largest nickel producer globally. However, the processing of nickel in Indonesia remains suboptimal, given the substantial volume of nickel ore exported without processing. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the impact of investment, production, unit cost, RCA value, and ECI on the export value of Indonesia's nickel. This research employs the Error Correction Mechanism (ECM) method. The analysis results indicate that, in the long term, nickel ore production, unit cost, and RCA have a significant positive effect. In the short term, only RCA and ECI have a significant positive effect on the export value of nickel. Lastly, according to the speed of adjustment value, the short-term model will be corrected by 44.78 percent in the first year and the remaining in subsequent years.

Abstract

Homeschooling is an educational option for children outside the school system that is practiced in various countries. In Indonesia, there is a trend towards an increasing number of homeschoolers. Homeschoolers value the flexibility in structure and content that homeschooling provides, which is not usually available in traditional schools. in traditional schools. One of the main challenges in formulating policies for implementing home schools is harmonizing the principles of flexibility and accountability. This research uses a mixed methods approach to obtain comprehensive data and provide a complete understanding. The harmonization of the Draft Regulations on the Implementation of Home Schools revealed that the state's interests in promoting home school accountability can be balanced with the interests of parents who desire flexibility. This allows for the proper fulfillment of the rights of homeschooled children. The results of the Focus Group Discussion (FGD) on the draft regulations for implementing home schools, conducted in Yogyakarta, Medan, and Balikpapan on November 9-11, 2022, showed that respondents were concerned about the principles of flexibility and accountability. Four issues were identified: homeschooling registration, scope of homeschooling material, recognition of past learning, and changing track.

Abstract

Security from crime is a fundamental human right, highlighted in Goal 16 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Indonesia continues to experience relatively low safety levels, with North Sumatera Province significantly contributing to the national crime rate. The high criminality in this region is influenced by social, economic, demographic, and political factors, and spatial effects, where crime rates in one area can impact neighboring regions. This study aims to analyze crime levels in North Sumatera while incorporating these spatial effects. Utilizing secondary data from Badan Pusat Statistik, the analysis employs the Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR) method, which accounts for spatially varying relationships between variables using Fixed Gaussian weighting based on constant spatial distances. The findings reveal spatial heterogeneity, indicating differing relationships across regions. Five independent variables significantly affecting crime levels include average years of schooling, population density, per capita expenditure, number of police officers, and the Gini ratio.

Abstract

Plastic waste is a critical environmental issue in Jakarta Bay, causing ecosystem degradation and challenging coastal management. This study analyzes seasonal dynamics and spatial impacts of floating plastic debris using Sentinel-2 imagery from July 2021 to November 2024. The Floating Debris Index (FDI) and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) were applied, with optimum thresholds determined through ROC curve analysis. Monthly median composites were processed to minimize atmospheric noise. The results show a recurring seasonal pattern, with debris consistently peaking in June, likely influenced by monsoon driven runoff and human activities. A clear increasing trend from 2021 to 2023 was followed by a decline in 2024, coinciding with the implementation of the National Ocean Love Month program. Buffer analysis indicated that most debris accumulates within 500 m of the shoreline, particularly near river mouths, ports, and settlements, while Thiessen Polygon analysis revealed hotspots concentrated along the eastern and western coasts. These findings highlight that floating plastic debris in Jakarta Bay is strongly shaped by seasonal cycles and land-based inputs, providing critical insights for designing targeted, evidence-based waste management policies.

Abstract

Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) as a measure of economic output in each region has not reflected sustainability because it overlooks the environmental impacts caused. Green GRDP is an important innovation that integrates environmental aspects into sustainable development. Indonesia has committed through TAP MPR IX/2001, Indonesia Emas 2045, and the SDGs to implement sustainable development. This study analyzes and projects Indonesia’s Green GRDP using the Ecosystem Service Value (ESV) approach. Satellite imagery data from MODIS MCD12Q1 and the Cellular Automata–Artificial Neural Network (CA-ANN) method are employed to predict land cover changes, while time series models are applied to forecast GRDP. Variations in provincial ESV are strongly influenced by land cover composition. In 2001, Papua recorded the highest Green GRDP and ESV contribution, whereas by 2020 (projected to 2030), Jakarta leads in Green GRDP but exhibits the lowest ESV contribution percentage. Throughout the period 2001–2030, Papua consistently maintains the highest ESV proportion relative to its Green GRDP. The findings highlight the importance of incorporating ecosystem service values into regional and national economic planning to ensure that economic growth inherently reflects environmental sustainability. This effort should be supported by spatially differentiated development strategies aligned with each region’s ecological capacity.
