Abstract

Information Communication Technology (ICT) facilitates teaching and learning especially in the 21st century where online/digital resources have taken over the globe. The polytechnic is designed to train students who form the nation’s manpower. This paper examined the challenges faced by Plateau State Polytechnic English lecturers in utilizing ICT for manpower development. The study was necessitated by the call from educators around the world for the incorporation and effective utilization of online resources in teaching and learning. In order to investigate the challenges experienced by lecturers in the polytechnic over the utilization of ICT in manpower development through the teaching of English, a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) was conducted on the departmental WhatsApp platform of the Department of General Studies of the polytechnic consisting of eighteen English lecturers. The study adopted Computer-Aided Language Learning (CALL) as its framework. The result of the FCD revealed among others that there were so many problems hampering the utilization of ICT in the teaching and learning in the institution. These challenges principally are related to data infrastructure, knowledge infrastructure and management infrastructure. The study concluded that there was need to put in place ICT facilities in the polytechnic for the lecturers to utilize in the teaching of English being the central language of communication in the development of the nation’s manpower. Abstract

The development of any society to a large extent depends on the degree of the security of lives and property of the citizens. A secure environment encourages intellectuals who are the drivers of nation-building; it also ensures national development. In recent years, Nigeria has been witnessing serious security threats that seem to have overwhelmed the nation’s security network and this has slowed down development in the country. This paper in light if these present realities, examined how technological innovations such as the integration of proper Information Communication Technology (ICT) resolve the emerging security threats bedeviling the country.  Integrating ICT in the humanities can help increase the rate of development in the country and also help resolve the emerging security threats bedeviling the country. Data for the paper was derived from a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) conducted via WhatsApp with fifteen selected academic staff who are in the humanities at the University of Jos. The data collected formed the basis of the discussion in the paper. The theoretical framework adopted is Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) because it explains how technology can be utilized in language learning and evidently in the humanities to resolve challenging issues. The paper discovered that the humanities have not been fully integrated with ICT and have also not been effectively utilized in the quest for advancing development in Nigeria and resolving security challenges. The paper recommended amongst others the full integration of ICT in the humanities to expand the scope of the field to be utilized in resolving security challenges in the country.

Abstract

In many instances, English language poses great challenges to English as a second language learners, obviously due to the variations between English and the learners' second language. The paper looked intensively at the challenges and attitudes of Iraq's Kurdistan English as a Second Language (ESL) University students towards improving their oral skills. The difficulties of oral skills exist in many institutions; students defied the obstacles during speaking; so, the study delved into the issues in this area. The study is quantitative. The data was collected from 63 participants selected from different institutions who utilized the survey questionnaire. The study was carried out in four educational institutions. The study used descriptive statistics and adopted tables and percentages to interpret the results. The results of this study indicated that the depression of students, apprehension, shyness, and lack of motivation made students unable to interplay with other mates in pair groups and perform activities. Teachers could not manage all activities in the classroom on their own. The results showed that lack of practice, chances, and motivation to speak in English classrooms were the most frequent obstacles for students learning to speak. Additionally, the methods and procedures employed in the lecture do not encourage students to utilize English. Thus, this study would assist university students in identifying the issues they encounter when learning to speak English and what they must do to overcome these obstacles.

Abstract

An adverb is used to indicate roughly how frequently a typical or usual action or event occurs. It is one of the fundamental English grammar structures that present challenges for students at KRI University. The aim of this paper was to investigate the challenges of the mobility of adverbs among KRI University students. The instrument used for data collection was the open-ended questionnaire created via a Google Form with a five-item structure shared with participants. SPSS version 21 software was used to analyze the data, which was deployed at five universities in KRI at the upper secondary level to evaluate how effectively the respondents used adverbs. The results were examined using simple percentages. Many of the respondents were found to often place adverbs in ways that led to illegible and unclear sentences. Additionally, some students were found to misuse classes of words, using one when they should use the other. Since adverbs cannot just be used in every sentence positions, the study concluded that adverbs and adverbials genuinely display restricted mobility occurring in just three positions: initial, middle and final. Accordingly, the result of the study of adverb movement depends largely on the adverb's subtype and nature which have a significant role in determining its mobility.
