Abstract

This study deals with the improvement of the students’ achievement in writing descriptive text through quantum learning. This study was conducted by using action research at second year of SMP N 1 Kabanjahe. The sample of this study was just one class namely: VIII-2. The number of this class was 36 students. The research was conducted in two cycles. Cycle 1 consisted of three meetings and cycle 2 consisted of two meetings. There were two kinds of data collected during the study, qualitative and quantitative data. The instrument for collecting the quantitative data was writing test while the quantitative data were gathered through interview, diary notes and observation sheet. Based on the writing test result, the students score kept improving in every test. In pre test, the mean score was 52, 61. In the test of cycle I, the mean score was 63 and the mean score in test of cycle II was 80. The conclusion is that quantum learning can improve the students’ descriptive writing achievement.   Key words: Students’ Achievement, Writing, Descriptive text, Quantum Learning

Abstract

This study was conducted as an attempt to discover the effect of Using Wordless Picture Book on students’ achievement in writing recount text. It was an experimental research. The subject was students of Grade VIII, SMP Negeri 1 Stabat. Two classes from five parallel classes were taken by lottery technique which divided into two groups, 30 students as control group and 30 students as experimental group. The instrument used in this research is to find quantitative data. The analysis in were showed that the scores of the students in the experimental group were significantly higher than the scores of the students in the control group at the level of significant m = 0.05 with the degree of freedom (df) 58, t-observed value 3.006 > t-table value > 2.000. The findings indicate that using Wordless Picture Book significantly affected the students’ writing achievement. So, English teachers are suggested to use Wordless Picture Book in order to improve students’ achievement in writing recount text. Keywords : Wordless Picture Book, Writing Recount Text

Abstract

This study attempts to improve students’ achievement in writing hortatory exposition text by using PLEASE (Pick, List, Evaluate, Activate, Supply, End) strategy  through classroom action research. The subjects of the research were 41 students of class XI IA 2 SMA Negeri 1 Tanjung Morawa. After analyzing the data in the two-cycle of classroom action research, it was found that there was an improvement of students score from 49.88 in the test I became 64.90 in the test II in cycle I and improved again became 74.23 in the test III in cycle II. In line with the data, it was showed that the use of PLEASE (Pick, List, Evaluate, Activate, Supply, End) strategy significantly improved student’s achievement in writing hortatory exposition text. English teachers are suggested to apply PLEASE strategy as one of the alternatives to teach writing hortatory exposition text in the class. Abstract

The aim of this study was to find out the pronunciation errors in long vowels in speaking test that have been made by the office administration and travel agency students  SMK Negeri 1 Binjai. It was conducted by using qualitative research. The sample of this stufy is 30 students which is from office administration and travel agency students. The instrument of this research is speaking test that recorded in each student. The results shown the total errors in office administration students are 103 while in travel agency students are 118. The percentage of the error of office administration class is 47% and the percentage of the error of travel agency class is 53%. It shown that their ability in speaking test is still low.  It was concluded that office administration students are better than travel agency students in speaking.Keywords: pronunciation error, long vowels, speaking test

Abstract

This study concerns with improvement of students’ achievement in writing recount text through mind mapping technique in Junior High School. The subject of the study was the students in SMP Free Methodist 1 Medan, class VIII-1 which consisted of 37 students. This study was conducted by applying Classroom Action Research. The procedure of this research was done in two cycles in six meeting. The mean of students’ score in test I was 67.24. It was increased in test II to 72.78 and in test III, it became 78.79. The improvement was not only showed in the mean of the students’ score but also in the number of students who got point up to 75. In test I, the number of students who got point up to 75 was only 5.4%. In test II, the number was increased to 29.8% while in test III it became 81.1%. Based on the diary notes, observation sheet and questionnaire sheet, it was found that the students gave good responds in the teaching and learning process. Based on the result of quantitative and qualitative data, it can be concluded that the application of mind mapping technique had improved the junior high school students’ achievement in writing recount text.   Keywords: Writing, Recount Text, Mind Mapping, Junior High School

Abstract

This study aimed to develop English reading materials needed for students of Cerdas Murni Islamic Junior High School through Authentic Material Approach (AMA).The objective of this study was to develop relevant English reading materials to the needs of Cerdas Murni Islamic Junior High School students especially eight grade . This study was conducted by Research and Development (R&D) design through six phases: 1) Collecting data, 2) Analyzing data, 3) Developing new materials, 4) Validating product 5) Revising materials, 6) final product. The data of this research were from the existing materials, syllabus,  students’ questionnaire, and the teachers’ interview. The result of this research showed that the existing materials were not suitable to the Islamic school students’ needs.. Therefore, new English reading materials were developed through Authentic Material Approach (AMA) principles in order to meet the Islamic students’ needs. Furthermore, developing English reading materials were recount text. Recount text expose personal recount “Tarawih Changed his Life and the biographical recounts of Prophet Muhammad SAW and Shalahuddin Al-Ayyubi”. The English reading materials were validated by English teacher and English lecturer. Both of them agreed that new English reading materials were suitable with the Islamic school students’ needs. Key Words: English reading materials, Islamic junior high school, Research and Development (R&D)
