Abstract

A dibanding SOPK fenotipe CCorrelation between Insulin Resistance and Hepcidin Levels (Iron Regulator) and Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome PhenotypeAbstractObjective: The goal of this study was to know the relationship between Insulin Resistance and serum hepcidin levels on Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) phenotype. Insulin Resistance and hyperinsulinism in PCOS promote erythropoiesis which can result in downregulation of hepcidin expressionMethods: This study uses a cross sectional and was conducted at several educational hospitals in Makassar, Indonesia. We included patients diagnosed with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) aged 18-40 years. Insulin resistance was checked using the HOMA-IR method and hepcidin levels were checked using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method on all subjects meeting the requirement. The results obtained will then be analyzed statistically. Results: 52 PCOS patients are included in this study, 40 patients with insulin resistance and 12 ones without insulin resistance. After examining the serum hepcidin level, we did not find a difference in insulin resistance among the four PCOS phenotypes (p>0.05), however there is PCOS level difference of phenotype A and phenotype C (p<0.05). We observed as well medium negative correlation between serum hepcidin level and the homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) (r=-0.419; p<0.05).Conclusions: Correlation is found where the higher the insulin resistance, the lower the hepcidin serum level. Also no difference is observed in insulin resistance of PCOS among the four phenotypes, however serum hepcidin level difference is indicated higher on PCOS phenotype A compared to that of PCOS phenotype C.Key words: polycystic ovarian syndrome, hepcidin, insulin resistance
