Abstract

This study examines the hermeneutic function of N?fi’s qir??ah in al-?abar?’s J?mi’ al-Bay?n, focusing on its role in the formation of legal meaning. Using a qualitative, literature-based research method, this study analyzes five legal verses related to ritual purity, menstruation, divorce, and the Hajj through descriptive, hermeneutic, and synthetic analysis. The findings indicate that N?fi’s qir?’ah operates through four interrelated functions: clarifying lexical and grammatical meanings, contributing to tarj?? among competing interpretations, strengthening legal arguments, and integrating textual evidence into al-?abar?’s broader interpretive framework. Rather than functioning as a standalone source of law, qir?’ah interacts with linguistic analysis of the Arabic language, hadith, reports from the Companions and Tabi’in, and the contextual coherence of the verses. This study reconstructs al-?abar?’s interpretive process as a cumulative model that moves from variations in recitation and linguistic analysis toward transmitted evidence, tarj??, and the formulation of legal rulings. This study argues that canonical qir???t must therefore be understood not merely as variants of the transmitted text, but as an integral instrument of classical Qur’anic legal hermeneutics.
