Abstract

An attempt has been made at a classification of the Lauraceae, into taxa down to the rank of subgenus. The characters and their taxonomic value are discussed amply. A system of the family and keys are given. Two subfamilies, viz Lauroideae and Cassythoideae, are recognized; several new tribes, subtribes and subgenera have been described. The accepted genera, 31 in number, are surveyed, with synonyms, typification, description, and particulars. Additional notes to "The genera of Lauraceae", which appeared in 1952, are given.

Abstract

The monotypic genus Cullenia was established by Wight (Icones PI. Ind. or. 5 (1) : pi. 1761-62 & text, 1851), who differentiated it from Durio Adans. mainly by the lack of a corolla and the position and shape of the anthers. The only species, originally described as Durio ceylanicus by Gardner, was cited by Wight as Cullenia excelsa Wight. K. Schumann corrected the specific epithet rather casually and atributed it (wrongly)to Wight. Bentham (in Benth. & Hook.,Gen. pi. 1: 212. 1867); Baillon (Hist. pi. 4: 159. 1872), Masters (in Hook, f., Fl. Br. Ind. 1: 350. 1874) and Beccari (Malesia 3: 219. 1889) accepted the genus.Bakhuizen van den Brink (in Bull. Jard. bot. Buitenzorg III, 6: 228.1924) incorporated the genus in Durio. In my opinion Cullenia represents a "good" genus by its lack of corolla.Alston, although accepting Bakhuizens reduction, informed me personally, that he, too, is inclined to consider Cullenia different from Durio. The pollen were described as being naked and pedicellate by Gardner; this wrong statement was corrected by Wight; the anthers are pedicellate and one-celled.In this paper a new Cullenia species is described, which strengthens the position of the genus; both species are restricted to the rain forest region of Ceylon and the Southern Indian Peninsula.

Abstract

1. Seven species of the genus Diplodiscus are described, of which three (D. microlepis, D. parviflorus and D. decumbens) are new to science, and one (D. hookerianus) was formerly described as Pentace (for the description of D. decumbens cf. p. 264).2. The area of distribution of the genus covers the Malay Peninsula, Borneo and the Philippines.3. The affinities of the genus are discussed.4. A key to the species is presented.

Abstract

The genus Durio comprises, as far as known, 27 species. The centre of distribution is Borneo with 19 species, followed by Malaya with 11 species and Sumatra with 7 species. It is likely, when Sumatra will be better explored, that this island will prove to have many more species. An exclave of the area of distribution is found in Burma, where one endemic species occurs. The common Durio zibethinus Murr. probably originated in Borneo or in Sumatra. It is now widely cultivated outside of its former area and in many places it has become spontaneous. The genus Durio is subdivided into two subgenera: Durio and Boschia Kosterm. & Soegeng, according to the way of dehiscence of the anthers (with a longitudinal slit in the former, with an apical pore in the latter). A key to the species is proposed. A map is added, to show distribution and endemism. Each species is amply described and provided with a drawing . Economic and ecological data are given.

Abstract

Of the genus Caryodapknopaia 7 species are known, of which two are described here for the first time. The genus occurs from Yunnan to Indochina, with the exception of C.tonkinensis, which goes as far as the Philippines and Borneo. Apparently most species are distributed by water and C.tonkinensis is assumed to have spread from the mainland to Borneo during the glacial period, when a land connection existed. The genus is related to Nothaphoebe and Alseodaphne and hence belongs to Perseae.

Abstract

The Asiatic Genus Neocinamomum comprises 6 species, of which N. atjehense is described here for the first time. cinnamomum fargesii Lee.is moved to Neocinnamomum,N. willsonii Allen is considered to be conspeeific with it. N. delavayi var.Mekongense hand.Mazz is raised to specific rank. N. hainanianum Allen is reduced to N.lecomtei.Excluded from the genus is N.confertiflorum, which is moved to Litsea.
