Abstract

Approximately 253 specimens of freshwater fish Homalopteraamphisguamata (Weber and de Beaufort) were collected during dry and rainy seasons from the upper reached of Alas river, Sumatra island in 1981-1983. Their food, growth and reproduction were studied. Phytoplanktonic algae, especially Bacillariophyceae and small aquatic insects are their food preference. The growth pattern was different between sex, that is allometric for the male and isometric for the female.Relatively, there is no difference of condition factor between sex (0.850 for the male and 0.848 for the female). However, tnevaiues were different between seasons. The mixed value in average was around 0.934 in rainy season and around 0.775 in dry season. Total fecundity highly varied from 63 up to 470 or 93 in average. The bigger size of the fish tended to show higher fecundity value. The percentage number of matured gonads during the rainy season was 8.89-22.55 % and in dry season was 8.21-18.33%. The diameter of matured eggs was around 2.01 mm in average.

Abstract

Morphometries and meristies data of Latimeria menadoensis, a new species of Coelacanth from Sulawesi, Indonesia (Pouyaud et al. 1999) are reported. Comparison with data of L. chalumnae as reported by McAllister and Smith (1978) and Forey (1998) are presented. Among the 22 descriptive characters only 41% are different. Some more specimens of L. menadoensis are still needed for more detail study of its morphological differences with L. chalumnae. Keywords: L. menadoensis, description, L. chalumnae, morphometries andmeristies comparison.

Abstract

An account is given on two species of freshwater flat-fish, Achiroides melanorhynchus (Blkr) and A. leucorhyncus Blkr. The eristing description of the latter species is considered inadequate and is hereby corrected based on twelve specimens collected from Lampung, South Sumatra. It is a new locality record for the species as well.

Abstract

ABSTRACTStudy of Reproduction Aspects of Endemic Fish Bonti-bonti (Paratherina striata)in Lake Towuti, South Sulawesi. Bonti-bonti, is one of endemic fishes in Lake Towuti andLake Mahalona. Bonti-bonti has been utilized by people around the lake for consumption inthe form of 6esh fish, dry fish, and salty fish; as ornamental fish; and as raw material foranimal feed. It should be protected from decreasing of fish population due to increasingexploitation and habitat quality changes. The objective of this research is to know thereproduction aspects of this endemic fish, as basic data for conservation. This research wasconducted in Lake Towuti, South Sulawesi from May 2006 to April 2007 at five stations.Samples were collected using experimental gillnet sized 0.625, 0.75, 1.0, and 1.25 inches. The result shows that testis and ovary was found each in one organ during a period of gonadadevelopment. Gonada maturity, was observed histologically oscured at five maturity stages. The range of egg diameters were from 0.01 to 1.50 mm. The fust gonada maturity period ofmale and female fish were reached at 5.53 and 6.26 cm of total length, respectively. Male andfemale fish gonada maturity (50%) were at 16.78 and 14.61 cm total length, respectively.Gonada maturity index value of male and female were 0.01-3.96% and 0.02-6.77%. Thereproduction ability is related to fecundity which have an effect on number ofjuveniles. Therange of fish fecundity were 818-6,051, which were devided kom female with 11.30-18.33cm total length. Bonti-bonti fish is partial spawner type.Key words : Reproduction aspects, endemic fish, Paratherina striata, and Lake Towuti

Abstract

IKE RACHMATIKA & SOETIKNO WIRJOATMODJO.1988.Feeding ecology of Glyptothorax major Blgr) (Bagaridae, Silurifoimes) in the Ala River,South East Aceh. Berita Biologi. 3(8): 396 399.A study on the feeding ecology of Glyptothorax major (Blgr) was conducted in the Alas River South East Aceh, Sumatra during early dry season, January 1983.Index of Preponderance analysis showed that this species is a benthic-insect feeder It was found that the food habit of immature and mature fish is slightly different. The mature fish's food habit is more varied than the immature's. Based on the concept of the "availability factor"of prey species,a tendency was also found that the mature fish is a more opportunistic of using food resources than the immature's.The supposed mechanisme of this difference and its relation with condition factor values is discussed.
