Abstract

Background: Chemotherapy is a systemic modality for cancer patients and has physical and psychological side effects. Psychological problems usually arise most often when undergoing chemotherapy. Not a few patients feel anxiety and negative perceptions when diagnosed with cancer, undergo surgery, or have an IV inserted to get chemotherapy drugs. Virtual Reality (VR) is a technology-based non-complementary therapy that has the potential to be involved as an alternative in the management of symptoms of cancer patients. Objective: To describe the effects of using Smartphone-Based Virtual Reality (S-VR) on the level of anxiety and perceptions of cancer patients during chemotherapy. Methods: A case study of ovarian cancer patient undergoing chemotherapy and were given Smartphone -Based Virtual Reality (S-VR) treatment. Results: The results obtained were a decrease in situational anxiety facing chemotherapy from a score of 40 (moderate anxiety) to a score of 21 (mild anxiety), decreased in pulse rate, and a significant increase in the perception score (28.6%) (less perception) to 94.3% ( good perception) after getting S-VR intervention during chemotherapy. Conclusion: S-VR can be a technology-based and non-invasive non-pharmacological intervention in reducing anxiety and providing positive experiences for patients during chemotherapy.

Abstract

The COVID 19 pandemic has caused various problems for cancer patients. Complaints related to changes in the medication process to the high risk of contracting COVID-19. This qualitative literature study aims to find out what the experiences of cancer patients are like during the COVID-19 pandemic. Articles were searched through Sciencedirect, Sage, Pubmed, and Scopus databases. Keywords using the PCC approach (Population (or participants)/Concept/Context) namely population "patient with cancer OR cancer patient"; concept "experience AND qualitative study" and context "COVID-19 pandemic". The methodological quality of the article findings used assessment tools for Qualitative Research from the Joanna Briggs Institute. A total of 10 articles were analysed. The COVID-19 pandemic provides cancer patients with experiences in decision making and undergoing therapy and has a positive and negative impact on cancer patients and caregivers. During the pandemic, cancer patients have many considerations related to information, family involvement, and treatment decisions during the pandemic. The anxiety experienced is a special challenge felt by cancer patients and caregivers during a pandemic. It is hoped that care services are aware of this situation, reduce the worries of cancer patients and treatment can still run well during a pandemic. Keywords: COVID-19 pandemic, experience, cancer patient, caregiver
