Abstract

Livelihood adaptation analysis provides an understanding of how slum dwellers' activities to cope with the varied constraints and survive in a slum area called Mantuil Village, South Kalimantan, Indonesia. Five capitals, namely human capital, social capital, physical capital, financial capital, and natural capital, are considered in livelihood adaptation analysis. This analysis attempts to fulfill a demand on reducing complex inequality and poverty in the city and to improve inclusiveness in the city and the well-being of slum dwellers. Simultaneously, this research attempts to fulfill a research gap to generate a suggested thorough analysis of the term slum, which considers the existing slum’s characteristics and practices. A field survey is conducted on 164 respondents, to gather information regarding the forms of adaptation experienced by dwellers in Mantuil Village. These forms are classified into five categories of capital. The Rank Based Quotient (RBQ) explores the most influential form of adaptation for improving well-being. The RBQ analysis shows the most influential forms of adaptation for improving well-being are optimizing the current job, intensifying concern for society, buying a motorcycle, expecting financial assistance from family, and utilizing farmland or family-owned land. Eventually, to improve well-being, the most influential forms of adaptation need to be supported and maintained since these are the likeliest forms Mantuil village’s dwellers follow.

Abstract

Livelihood analysis involves perceptions and complexities, as it encompasses a bottom-up approach and is context-dependent, focusing on individuals, households, communities, and social groups. Furthermore, livelihood adaptation is crucial to cope with various risks and shocks, which pose a greater threat for vulnerable residents living in a slum area. This analysis attempts to understand the forms of livelihood adaptation and constraints within the area. This understanding also contributes to a valuable discussion on livelihood and better interventions. The Garrett’s ranking is employed to identify and analyze these forms and constraints. The dominant adaptation forms involve job seeking, land and tools utilization, counting on family support, and increasing societal concern for others. The key constraints comprise limited job opportunities, inequality, damaged infrastructure, inappropriate social assistance, and uncertain natural disruption. Both adaptation forms and constraints are interconnected, and resolving constraints is needed to facilitate effective adaptation.

Abstract

The concept of decent work has few explanatory references and comparative descriptions due to limited research. So far, the concept of decent work only refers to standards and concepts issued by the International Labor Organization (ILO). Meanwhile, the Local Economic Development (LED) approach is an alternative strategy that prioritizes local aspects and resources for effective development. The research method chosen in this research is the phenomenological method. The phenomenological method explores human experiences (people’s lived experiences). This is in line with the concept of decent work and local economic development, which is highly influenced by the opinions and narratives described by the community, in this case, the research participants. This research explains the concept of decent work and local economic development based on the conditions of Banjarmasin City. It generated five explanatory clusters in this research. Cluster of general perspectives and specific perspectives related to the concept of decent work. The general perspective is that decent work should meet minimum standards and protect workers’ rights. While a specific perspective emphasizes subjectivity in viewing various decent work concepts. The other three clusters were formed from the exploration of the concept of local economic development, such as the challenge cluster, the opportunity cluster, and the relationship cluster between the concept of local economic development and decent work. These three clusters emphasize that the development concept requires comprehensive planning. Development faces challenges, such as insufficient government support, uncooperative communities, and disinterest among local people, but there are opportunities to boost local economies and improve work decency and conditions.

Abstract

Taxes received from hotel is one regional or local-own income sources. There was a positive trend and significant rise of this tax revenue during 2018-2022, despite it declined in 2020 due to lockdown and low rate of hotel occupancy. This research dissects and analyzes the contribution of this so-called hotel tax revenue in Banjarmasin city. This research uses quantitative data and quantitative descriptive method. It discovered that the realization and target of this tax revenue fluctuated during 2018-2022 and has a minor contribution to regional income. In general, during these five years, the hotel tax revenue contributed less than 10 percent to the regional or local-own income.

Abstract

Effective institutional arrangements and policies can transform the agricultural sector by enhancing productivity to address present and future challenges. The food estate based on farmer corporation is viewed as a promising model for agricultural institutional development. It has the potential to integrate various agricultural activities from upstream to downstream, thereby increasing farmers’ overall productivity and welfare. However, institutional misalignments hinder optimal outcomes. This study employs a blended approach that includes an exploratory study and a deductive thematic analysis guided by the Institutional Analysis and Development (IAD) framework. The exploratory study emphasizes the importance of developing agricultural institutions and identifies key gaps between the grand design of food estate and its actual implementation. Meanwhile, the deductive thematic analysis further explores stakeholders’ perspectives, serving as a foundation for the analysis using the IAD framework. The study finds that ineffective implementation of the food estate and the suboptimal establishment of farmer corporation are caused by stakeholders’ limited understanding, weak coordination, insufficient technology, low skills and capacities among human resources, and limited access to capital. Additionally, when developing agricultural institutions, it is essential to consider the local community’s support and trust to improve the suitability of the selected institutional form. Furthermore, agricultural institutional development should be supported by a well-organized structure, clear operational plans, and core activities to ensure sustainable implementation.

Abstract

Food Inflation remains one of the most persistent sources of price volatility in Indonesia and poses a significant challenge for macroeconomic stability and household welfare. This study conducts quantitative empirical time series research to examine the asymmetric effects of Money Supply (M2) and Farmers Terms of Trade (FTT) on Food Inflation. The analysis uses monthly data from 2011 to 2023 obtained from Bank Indonesia and Statistics Indonesia and applies the Nonlinear Autoregressive Distributed Lag (NARDL) model, which is appropriate for capturing asymmetry and accommodating variables integrated at different orders. The selection of M2 is based on monetary theory which states that changes in liquidity influence aggregate demand and inflation, while the use of FTT is supported by agricultural and development literature showing that farmers purchasing power affects food production capacity and food price dynamics. The results reveal significant asymmetric effects in both the short and long run. Increases and decreases in M2 both raise Food Inflation, and the stronger effect during declining M2 reflects downward price rigidity and the dominance of quasi money in Indonesia. A decline in FTT significantly increases long run inflation through constraints on agricultural input access and reduced food supply. The findings also confirm inflation persistence. These results imply that liquidity management and policies that strengthen farmer purchasing power are essential to stabilize food prices. The study recommends integrating monetary policy with agricultural support measures to mitigate future food inflation pressures.
