Abstract

Background: Cerebral Palsy (CP) is the most common form of physical disability in childhood, it caused by a static lession in the immature brain. CP spastic diplegic is one of the most common clinical subtypes of CP that lower limbs are more severely affected than the upper limbs. Different methods have been used to improve standing function in children with CP spasic diplegic, but still little is known regarding the effect of trunk strengthening exercise on standing function in children with CP spastic diplegic. This study aims to compare the effect of bridging and quadruped position with lower extremity lift exercise versus unilateral bridge and prone bridge exercise on standing function in children with CP spastic diplegic. Methods: An experimental study with pre and post test design on 10 children with CP spastic diplegic, ages 8 to 13 years. The children were divided into 2 groups: (1) group treated with bridging and quadruped position with lower extremity lift exercise (Group-1), (2) group treated with unilateral bridge and prone bridge exercise (Group-2). The treatments were given for 6 weeks, 3 days per week. Standing function was measured by Gross Motor Function Measurement (GMFM). Results: The result showed that there were significant differences on standing function in Group-1 (p=0,001) and Group-2 (p=0,002), but there were no significant differences on standing function between Group-1 and Group-2 (p=0,302). Conclusion: There were no differences between the group treated with bridging & quadruped position with lower extremity lift exercise and group treated with unilateral bridge & prone bridge exercise on standing function in children with CP spastic diplegic.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Background: Cerebral palsy (CP) refers to a group of disorders of the development of movement and posture that are attributed to a non-progressive lesion that occurs in the immature brain. Children with CP have various degrees of impairment of postural control which can limit physical activity and participation in daily life. Clinical observations have suggested that hippotherapy may be an effective strategy for habilitating postural control deficits in children with CP spastic diplegic. However, there is limited research to support this notion. This case study aimed to investigate the effects of hippotherapy on postural control in children with CP spastic diplegic. Methods: Single case study with pre and post test design of a girl with CP spastic diplegic aged 19 years. A hippotherapy protocol was performed for 45 minutes, twice a week, for 3 weeks. Each hippotherapy session consisted stretching, strengthening, and balance activities. Posture Assesment Scale, a criterion-referenced observational measure designed to measure change in the postural control in children with CP spastic diplegic, was chosen as the assessment tool. Results: Upon completion of the 3-week intervention, there was improvement scores in posture assesment scale. The results showed that there was difference score of posture assesment scale on pre hippotherapy (T0=7) and post hippotherapy (T6=9). Conclusion: The results of this study demonstrate that hippotherapy can improve postural control in children with CP spastic diplegic.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Background: Diastasis recti is an impairment characterized by the rectus abdominis muscle separates in midline at linea alba. The separation of the linea alba in diastasis recti results in the forming of a space referred to as an inter-recti distance. Symptoms in diastasis recti are an increase in the distance between the anterior borders of the rectus muscle influence the strength of the abdominal wall musculature. Various intervention techniques have been carried out to reduce the intra-recti distance in diastatic recti conditions, but research is still limited on the effect of exercise therapy on reducing the intra-recti distance in diastasis recti. The purpose of the study was to determine the effect of exercise therapy in reducing inter-recti distance in postpartum with diastasis recti. Methods: Single case study with pre and post test design in 38 years old woman with diastasis recti. The exercise therapy protocol was carried out for 30 minutes, three times a week for four weeks. Exercise therapy consisted of abdominal exercise and pelvic floor exercise. The measurements used in this study used calipers to evaluate the reduction inter-recti distance. Results: After being given an exercise therapy intervention for four weeks, the results of the intra-recti distance reduction were obtained. The results of the initial measurement pre exercise therapy obtained E0= 3.9 cm, and at the post exercise therapy E4 = 2.4 cm. Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that exercise therapy can reduce the intra-recti distance in postpartum with diastasis recti Keywords: Diastasis recti, rectal distance, exercise therapy, calipers
