Abstract

Abstract:This article attempts to trace the origins of the translation of the Prophet Muhammad's prayer which is claimed to have been recited at Ali and Fatimah's wedding using the phrase "Gathering the scattered". This prayer is popular among the wedding invitation card industry players. The claim that the prayer is connected to the Prophet, Ali and Fatimah has prompted some to conclude and stigmatize that the prayer originates from the Shiites. By conducting a search and comparison of Sunni and Shia hadith literature, as far as is accessible, it is found that the translation of the popular wedding prayer has elements in common with the editorials contained in both Sunni and Shia literature. However, different details between prayers are popular in the community and prayers that are contained in both corpora of literature. Especially regarding the details of the benefits and forms of hereditary blessings. These details are additions outside the hadith (interpretation). This prayer can be practiced. However, attribution to the Prophet saw. will be problematic if viewed from the point of view of Hadith Science. From the point of view of the sociological context, the stigmatization of the prayer "Gathering the scattered" has grown together with the emergence of the anti-Shi'a movement in Indonesia in the last decade as a result of the Arab Spring in the Middle East.

Abstract

This article discusses the contribution of the Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) elite in environmental sustainability issues in Indonesia during 1980-2015. Using the historical idea method, the author analyzes a number of documents and finds that evolutionarily, NU elites have been involved and made important contributions to environmental preservation. At least, there are three main contributions. First, the development of environmental fiqh thinking that is moral-ethical in nature about the necessity of preserving the environment. Two key NU figures who represent this spirit are KH. Ali Yafie (Rais Amm 1991-1992) and KH. Sahal Mahfudz (1999-2014). Second, raising Islamic boarding school scholars to create environmental sustainability discourses in the perspective of Islamic tradition. The Bahsul Masail study forums that characterize NU are filled with environmental issues. Both kiai caretakers and Islamic boarding school students are familiar with the issue of environmental sustainability. The climax is the emergence of calls for environmental jihad (jihad al-bi'iyyah). Third, the formation of environmental institutions in the organizational structure of NU. This contribution shows that religious groups can play an important role in spreading the idea of environmental sustainability. This finding is in line with the findings of Palmer and Finlay (2003), Barclay (2007) WWF (2010) regarding the effectiveness of religious communities in transmitting environmental preservation insights.

Abstract

This article seeks to explain the context of the emergence of neo-traditionalist hadith scholars in Egypt’s digital socio-political-religious space. The analysis focuses on Sheikh Ma’bid ‘Abd al-Karīm, an al-Azhar hadith scholar who is nicknamed “Sheikh al-Majālis al-Ḥadīthiyyah”. Using a qualitative approach and literature study methods, the analysis finds that the presence of Sheikh Ma’bid ‘Abd al-Karīm in the digital space cannot be separated from the diverse context of contemporary Egyptian religious authority contestation. Sheikh Ma’bid is part of the voice of a wider network of clerics known as “Neo Islamic Traditionalism” centered at Al-Azhar under the leadership of Sheikh Aḥmad Ṭayib. The Islamic neo-traditionalism movement is a reassertion of al-Azhar’s religious identity and authority which had dimmed amid the rise of various currents of Islamic thought, especially transnational-Salafi. Shaykh Ma’bid plays an important role in maintaining al-Azhar’s symbolic authority in the field of hadith studies through the digital content he creates.

Abstract

This article examines the views of Christiaan Snouck Hurgronje, the prominent Dutch Orientalist and colonial advisor, on the hadith text Ḥāsyiyah ʿalā Mukhtaṣar Ibnu Abī Jamrah li al-Bukhārī, as expressed in his official advisory letter (halaman 1989–1991 of Ambtelijke Adviezen van C. Snouck Hurgronje) to the Dutch colonial government on 28 April 1891. Using critical discourse analysis (CDA) based on Teun A. Van Dijk's three-dimensional model—text, social cognition, and social analysis—the study analyzes the textual strategies, cognitive schemas, and power dynamics embedded in Snouck's advisory memo regarding the practice of reading this hadith collection among Acehnese Muslims during the Dutch-Aceh War. Contrary to his earlier skepticism about hadith authenticity expressed in Muhammadanisme, and against the colonial government's initial suspicion that this reading practice was a vehicle for anti-colonial resistance, Snouck assessed the kitab positively, argued it posed no political threat, and recommended its preservation in the Bataviaasch Genootschap library. The analysis reveals that Snouck's positive framing was shaped by his Islam Politiek framework, his dual identity as scholar and colonial advisor, and his extensive immersive knowledge of Islam acquired through fieldwork in Mecca and across the Dutch East Indies. Each of Van Dijk's thirteen textual elements—from lexicon and metaphor to presupposition and coherence—converges on a single discursive goal: reframing the colonial government's suspicious gaze toward an act of Islamic piety as something that poses no threat to colonial authority. The article argues that Snouck's treatment of this hadith text represents a notable case study in the complex, non-deterministic relationship between Orientalist scholarship, colonial administration, and Islamic textual tradition.
