Abstract

The research is aimed to improve the students’ English reading comprehensionskills of Grade XI IPA at SMA Islam 3 Sleman Yogyakarta.The subjects of the research were 17 students. This research focused on theimplementation of SQ3R method to improve the students’ reading comprehension skills.The research was done in two cycles. Each cycle was divided into four steps, i.e planning,acting, reflecting, and evaluating. The data were collected by observations, field notes,interviews, questionnaires, and documentations. The data were analized usingquantitative and qualitative interpretations. The succeed of the research were achievedbased on some criteria related to the students’ or teacher’s improvement changes.The result of the research shows that the improvement happened on six aspectsthat become reading comprehension criteria, i.e determining main ideas or topic sentence,recognizing detail information, mastering vocabularies and grammar, searching implicitand explicit information in texts. The improvements can be seen through the averagescores in each criterion. The average score in English reading comprehension skillsbefore the action was 27.64. The score in the first action was 33.52 and that in thesecond cycle was 40. It can be concluded that the improvement was 21.27% from pretestto the first cycle, 19.33% from the first cycle to the second cycle and 44.71% frompre-test until the last cycle. The improvement in each criterion was determining mainidea or topic (33.96%), recognizing detail information (68.57%), mastering vocabulary(85.71%), mastering grammar (28.81%), searching implicit information in a text (51.06%),and explicit information (25.53%).Keywords: English Reading Comprehension Skills, Grade XI IPA at SMA Islam 3 SlemanYogyakarta, SQ3R.

Abstract

The aim of this research and development study was to develop a set of English teaching and learning materials for nursing students. The development of the materials was carried out in three phases: planning, developing, and evaluating. The research findings revealed the nursing students’ needs concerning media, language instruction, assignments, lecturer’s and student’s roles,  setting of the class, learning activities, use of English for the students, students’ intention to learn English, setting in which English was used, learning themes, input texts, students’ English proficiency, target culture knowledge, appropriateness of the English book used, English skills the students want to improve, and layout of the materials. The means of materials were 3.95 in terms of the language teaching and 3.63 in terms of the content. The means of three units were 3.43, 3.44, and 3.33. The means implied that the developed materials were appropriate to be used in the teaching and learning process as the materials met the nursing students’ needs and interest.

Abstract

Background: Learning assessment has been left behind compared to other components of teaching such as instructional methods or media development. This paper aims to describe problems faced by English teacher candidates studying at the English Education Department of a university in Java, Indonesia in developing test kits for assessing students’ learningMethodology: This study is qualitative in nature. The investigation involved 28 teacher candidates taking two sequential courses on testing namely English Learning Assessment and English Language Learning Test Development who were then asked to write a set of English learning achievement tests as their end-of-class mini project. A total of 1052 multiple choice questions were analyzed by three investigators to reveal the teacher candidates’ problems in developing test kits. Problems are reported and described quantitatively. Findings: The study reveals that the students face difficulties in formulating test kit formats, stems, options, and texts.Conclusion: Recommendations include education for writing test questions and improving or revising the learning syllabus and materials of the above-mentioned courses on language learning assessment Originality: The number of questions or participants can be improved as well as the scope of analysis to make the study more reliable.
