Abstract

Some studies have proven that the utilization of text-to- speech has many good influences. However, learning motivation also affects learners’ reading comprehension ability. Meanwhile, good reading comprehension ability is a ‘must’ for learners especially pre-service teachers since they are supposed to be professional future teachers. This study aimed to investigate the impact of text-to-speech and learning motivation on pre-service teachers‟ reading comprehension ability. This research involved sixty preservice teachers who were at fourth semester of English Education Study Program of PGRI University of Palembang, and applied factorial design. Some results were revealed: (1) there was a statistically significant difference in reading comprehension ability between pre-service teachers who were taught using text-to- speech and those who were not; (2) there was no statistically significant interaction effect of text-to-speech and learning motivation on pre-service teachers‟ reading comprehension ability.

Abstract

Over the past two decades, technology has been widely harnessed in English language teaching for the sake of learners’ quality. This research was conducted to figure out if there was significant difference of the speaking achievement between students who uploaded their video projects online and those who did not. This study was an experimental study harnessing video project combined with social media, Instagram, as the treatment. Two groups of mining students consisting 52 participants were selected randomly and categorized into experimental and control group. Mining students were selected in this study as the college, Akamigas Polytechnic of Palembang, where this study conducted demands the learners to speak English in the campus. The results from Wilcoxon test revealed that posting video online showed a statistically significant change in the speaking performance of the experimental group (Z = -4.207, p = 0.000). Finally, significant difference in the speaking skill was also found between the two groups shown by the result of Mann Whitney Test where the sig. value was 0.029 lower than 0.05. In conclusion, this study revealed that video project was absolutely effective to boost learners’ speaking skill. However, posting them on Instagram is more effective and meaningful

Abstract

This study investigated EFL learners’ attitude towards English program conducted by the language institute in an engineering college in Palembang. The program consisted of 36 regular meeting where participants learn English for their field and TOEFL test. This evaluation was conducted at the end of the program to advance the English program in the college to meet their learners’ of English. As a part of evaluation, this study evaluated six aspects in program namely teaching materials, teaching methodology, course fee, course design, facilities and service provided in the program. The participants of this study were 87.9% learners who took English course in the institute. A questionnaire consisting 15 items was given to the participants at the end of the program. This study revealed that most participants had positive attitude towards the English program provided by the language institute. Clearly, they were satisfied with the English program in the college.
