Abstract

Mempelajari bahasa inggris harus mengikuti bentuk-bentuk waktu (tenses) dalam bahasa Inggris itu sendiri. Bentuk waktu (tenses) dapat memudahkan kita dalam mengerjakan tugas-tugas dalam membentuk membuat kalimat (sentence). Oleh karena itulah, keahlian yang memadai dalam penguasaan bahasa Inggris memang cukup dibutuhkan agar nantinya kita tidak dibebani dengan tugas atau pekerjaan yang menuntut kita dalam penguasaan bahasa Inggris terutama kegiatan pembuatan kalimat (sentence) present. Untuk mengatasi masalah tersebut, maka dilaksanakannya metode pengajaran ini yang dilaksanakan di SMP Istiqlal Deli Tua. Dengan tujuan untuk melatih dan membekali keterampilan bagi siswa dalam membuat kalimat (sentences). Sehingga siswa/i SMP Istiqlal Deli Tua tersebut mudah membuat kalimat (sentences) present. Khalayak sasaran dari pengabdian ini adalah siswa/i SMP Istiqlal Deli Tua. Kegiatan pengabdian telah dilaksanakan pada tanggal 20 Juli 2021 yang bertempat di SMP Istiqlal Deli Tua, dengan diikuti oleh 25 orang peserta siswa/i SMP Istiqlal Deli Tua.

Abstract

This study focuses on utilizing English songs as a means to enhance students' language skills and increase their motivation to learn English. The research aims to investigate the impact of song lyrics on expanding students' vocabulary. The study employs a quantitative research approach and involves one class of Seven-grade students from Yabes School, comprising 20 in the first semester of 2022-2023 academic year. The data collection instruments consist of pre-test and post-test assessments, which include fill-in-the-blank tests and multiple-choice questions. The findings reveal a significant improvement in vocabulary, as indicated by higher mean scores in the post-test (72) compared to the pre-test (45), resulting in a score increase of 27 points. This study concludes that the use of songs effectively enhances students' vocabulary acquisition by stimulating their learning process and fostering word memorization. The findings of the study indicate that the students perceived English songs as beneficial for their vocabulary learning, acquisition, and retention. The results demonstrated that the students believed that English songs had the ability to capture their interest in learning vocabulary. Furthermore, utilizing English songs assisted them in remembering the forms, meanings, and usage of the newly acquired vocabulary. Abstract

This study was motivated by the low speaking proficiency of hospitality students at UCM Campus, particularly in terms of fluency, confidence, mastery of hospitality vocabulary, pronunciation accuracy, and the ability to respond to situations in hotel service. Conventional speaking instruction has not yet fully equipped students to communicate effectively in real-world scenarios as required by the hospitality industry. This study aims to analyse the effectiveness of simulation methods in improving the speaking skills of hospitality students. This study employs a quantitative approach using a quasi-experimental method with a one-group pretest-post-test design. The research subjects were D3 degree students in the Hospitality program at UCM Campus. Data were collected through speaking tests, assessment rubrics, observations, and documentation. The assessment indicators include fluency, pronunciation, word choice, sentence structure, clarity of information, self-confidence, politeness, communicative responsiveness, and appropriateness to the hospitality context. The research results show that in the pretest phase, 40% of students were in the “below average” category and 60% were in the “average” category. After the simulation method was implemented, the post-test results showed an improvement, with 76% of students in the “good” category and 24% in the “very good” category. These findings indicate that the simulation method effectively enhances students’ speaking skills by providing realistic, contextual learning that aligns with actual hotel work situations. Through simulations, students become accustomed to practicing service communication, such as greeting guests, taking reservations, explaining facilities, handling complaints, and performing check-in and check-out procedures. The simulation method is recommended as a relevant speaking instruction strategy for students in the  D3 Hospitality program.
