Abstract

In the 14th and 15th centuries, European countries desperately needed the spice nutmeg, which was used for a variety of purposes, such as preserving fresh meat in cattle, for medical and dietary purposes, and in claims about its health and virility properties. The high demand for the commodity nutmeg opened up trade networks that stretched from Asia to Africa and Europe. Banda Naira, as a nutmeg-endemic region, has been connected for centuries. This study uses a qualitative method with a socio-historical perspective and aims to analyze the Banda nutmeg spice management model from 1945 to 2018. The research findings show that the distribution pattern of post-colonization nutmeg plantations from 1945 to 2018 was carried out by lottery, which was specifically intended for people who had families based on their necessities of life. While the management pattern of nutmeg plantations includes the harvesting of nutmeg up to the drying of nutmeg, this is carried out by smoking and drying under the hot sun in order to produce quality dried nutmeg. This nutmeg spice management model has had a huge impact on the people of the Banda Islands, both positive and negative. The positive impact is bringing prosperity to the people of the Banda Islands, but the negative impact is land grabbing, theft, and manipulation of the quality of nutmeg.

Abstract

This article aims to analyze the role of a cold storage company, namely PT. Harta Samudra, which stands in Nusantara Village, Banda District, in creating job opportunities and improving the economy of the Banda Naira community. Given the current condition of the Bandanese people, they are still vulnerable to the problems of unemployment and scarcity of jobs. The main question of this research is whether the Harta Samudra cold storage has the potential to improve the welfare of the people of Banda Naira, considering the very high productivity of the results obtained by the small fishing industry in Maluku, which can also affect the high economic level of the residents of Banda Naira. This article is based on qualitative research, which takes the subject of corporate employees through observation and interview procedures, heuristic analysis, source criticism, and interpretation. The findings of this research indicate that the Coldstorage Company owned by PT. Samudra's property in Banda Naira has been able to play a role in empowering the people of Banda by opening new jobs and increasing the income of workers who are sufficient for the standard of living of the residents of Banda Naira. Articles can show the positive role of a storage company in Banda, but a case comparison is needed with other similar companies in Banda Naira so that it can become an input for various stakeholders in Maluku and Banda Naira in particular

Abstract

This study aims to determine the impact of waste management managed by the Banda Naira Banda Naira Mandiri (BNM) in Kampung Baru Village, Banda District, Central Maluku Regency. This research focuses attention on changes in people's behavior in responding to the existence of waste banks for increasing economic welfare and internalizing ecological awareness in the lives of the Banda people. Research uses qualitative methods with data collection techniques through questionnaires, interviews, observation, and documentation. Data were analyzed using the processes of data collection, data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusions. The results showed that the pattern of waste bank management driven by BNM and carried out in schools and inter-island villages has increased awareness of the dangers of waste that is not properly processed. People are becoming more concerned with utilizing waste rather than disposing of it. Through the 3R principles, community empowerment efforts in the context of waste have been quite successful and have had a positive impact on ecological education, increased economic welfare, and creativity for the people of Banda Naira. However, it is realized that there is still limited knowledge, especially in the management of plastic waste, and several problems with the price of waste, which is claimed to be too cheap. This research recommends conducting further studies on exploratory research in order to obtain a formulation of a coastal community-based waste management model
