Abstract

This research was conducted because it was motivated by the dichotomous problem of education in today's modern era. Distinguishing between religious knowledge and general science which seems to be inseparable. However, there is an Islamic education figure, Mahmud Yunus, who has thoughts and a work of interpretation that has contributed to the idea of renewing the goals of Islamic education. This type of research is library research that collects primary data through books related to the work of Mahmud Yunus. The secondary data is obtained from literature and supporting documents qualitatively and described in descriptive form. The results of the research conclude that, in Mahmud Yunus' thought and commentary, he tried to bridge the gap between religious science and general science so that there would be no dichotomy between the two. He is also the one who pioneered the establishment of modern schools or Islamic boarding schools, one of which is the Darussalam Islamic boarding school, Gontor Ponorogo. Penelitian ini dilakukan kerena dilatar belakangi masalah dikotomis pendidikan di era modern saat ini. Membedakan anatara ilmu agama dan ilmu umum yang seolah-olah tidak bisa disatukan. Namun ada tokoh pendidikan Islam yaitu Mahmud Yunus yang mempunyai pemikiran dan suatu karya tafsir yang mempunyai andil dalam gagasan pembaharuan tujuan pendidikan Islam. penelitian ini adalah penelitian kepustakaan yang menghimpun data primer melalui buku-buku terkait karya Mahmud yunus. Adapun data sekunder didapat dari lieteratur dan dokumen yang mendukung secara kulitatif dan diuraikan dalam bentu diskriptif. Hasil dari penelitian menyimpulkan bahwa, dalam pemikiran dan karya tafsirnya Mahmud Yunus, dia berusahamenjembatani antara ilmu agama dan ilmu umum agar tidak terjadi dikotomi antar keduanya. Dia juga yang mempelopori beridiriya sekolah-sekolah atau pondok pesantren modern, salah satunya adalah pondok pesantren Darussalam Gontor Ponorogo.
