Abstract

The article is concerned with the concept of ‘perspective’ in Cognitive Grammar and Communicative Dynamism. To the former, ‘perspective’ is understood in the realm of cognitive concepts such as space, motion, locationality, directionality, importance, and focus ascribable to a particular sentence segment. To the latter, ‘perspectiving’ is a matter of valuating, viz. assigning informational value to a sentence segment as a part of a distributional field of communicative dynamism. The two streams of thought evidently hold different constructs per-taining to the term ‘perspective’: conceptual-categorial on the one hand, and functional-informational on the other. However, the two seem to agree when ‘perspectiving’ is concerned with the notion of importance and focus or rhematization. DOI: https://doi.org/10.24071/llt.2012.150106

Abstract

As a place of conservation, research, education, and entertainment, a museum can support formal educational institutions to introduce kinds of literacy, including local cultural literacy. Local  cultural  literacy in this  study referred to  the knowledge of  wayang ( = puppets) belonging  to Museum Wayang Kekayon Yogyakarta (MWK).  Visitors  to MWK can learn the tangible and intangible aspects of  wayang collections  of  MWK. As a preliminary study of a multi-year research, this study addressed two research questions: 1) what educational functions can be promoted through MWK collections? and 2) what criteria should  promotional media  have  in order to promote MWK? The study implemented hermeneutic approach supported by theories of  Semiotics,   Discourse, Pragmatics, and   Web Usability. Data were collected by browsing the Internet, conducting observations while visiting MWK, interviewing experts on museum, wayang, and semiotics and MWK educators. The findings of the study were 1) the identification of  MWK educational functions  to introduce cultural literacy and other relevant philosophical values, and 2) the CLEAR criteria of effective promotional media to promote  cultural (wayang) literacy in the digital era. The study recommended that fun but meaningful activities should be conducted at MWK, and relevant resources and tools should be provided  and used  to support the  activities.DOI: https://doi.org/10.24071/ijhs.2018.020104

Abstract

This study explores politeness strategies in intergenerational media interactions, a conversational exchange between the host Steve Harvey and three-year-old James, the youngest mayor of Dorset, Minnesota, on NBC’s Little Big Shots TV program.  The study is based on Brown-Levinson’s politeness theory (1987). Using a descriptive qualitative approach, the research examined how politeness strategies are employed in a media environment involving a child participant and shows the delicate balance among entertainment goals, institutional discourse, and face preservation. The results uncover sophisticated applications of the four strategies of politeness, namely bald on record, positive politeness, negative politeness, and off-record strategies that make communication across age differences effective while upholding audience engagement and participant comfort. The findings offer insights into how subtle communicative tactics are used to play social roles, uphold institutional esteem, and foster authentic adult-child interactions in television programming.

Abstract

This present study is devoted to exploring the use of address forms and vocatives-diminutives in Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë, with a focus on the way the use of language portrays the dynamic between the main characters and their emotions as well as their interpersonal relationships. With the help of a framework introduced by Klaus P. Schneider (2003) that captures diminutives as pragmatic speech act modifiers, the aim of the study is to identify specific types of vocative-diminutives and how they are used, with particular attention paid to Heathcliff, Catherine Earnshaw, and Edgar Linton's utterances. Through the use of a qualitative analysis method and library research, this study examines the chosen chapters of the novel by looking closely at the text and categorizing them according to their uses of diminutives in vocative, synthetic, and analytic forms. According to the results of the study, 27 diminutive forms are identified, and the most prevalent use of diminutives is the use of vocative full names, with seven instances. Following this, analytic vocative-diminutives are present six times, and synthetic vocative-diminutives could be found five times. In the meantime, vocative first names, vocative kinship terms, and vocative titles are all present twice, respectively. In addition, diminutive first names occur twice as well, whereas diminutive full names do not occur nearly as frequently, with only one instance.
